Brown a really nice guy and he does a lot better at teaching Orgo 2 then 1. If you read the book before class you'll really understand his lectures. A 60 is a C in his class and he curves more then professor i've ever known (i've had 18pt curves before). He's an okay teacher and you can definitely do well if you try really hard.

Most pointless lectures ever. He ranted once that it is our fault for failing if we have jobs/kids. We were graded by 3 tests, meaning the final could be worth 70%. He kept delaying material because he thought it was too much for one test, and yet saved ALL reactions for the LAST WEEK and that made up 100% of the final. I have nightmares.

I'm studying for a test in med school and memories of the class I took with Brown just came across my mind. If this is any indication of how miserable his class was, that was 4 years ago. Find literally any other professor. I squeaked out alive but there were many pre-meds in my class who would have made great doctors -- Brown crushed their dreams

Was absolutely terrible. The lectures were absolutely pointless, confusing and hard to follow. He is not accessible outside of class and honestly doesnt care about the students.

test questions are ridiculously hard. study all the material given to you and you still wont know some of the questions. exams are curved but still difficult to get an A

He stands at the front of the room and lectures, rarely writing anything on the board and speeds through powerpoints whenever he bothers to show them. As someone who cannot understand concepts by being talked at, Brown is horrible. The homeworks are pretty decent and fairly representative of the tests, but the tests WILL throw new material at you.

Grading scale is cool, curves on exams, anything below a 50 is an F. But this leniency is only because this class is EXTREME. Attendance isnt mandatory, so I stopped showing up and just started teaching myself because he doesnt really teach anything useful in class.

It's a tough subject. You have to put in the work, ask questions, think about the lecture material and go over homework questions and PRACTICE. It's really friggin hard. 5 stars because he teaches you what he thinks is important and if you understand the key concepts he teaches, it can be applied to other chapters. You HAVE to practice.

3 Exams (60%), 1 Cummulative Final Exam (30%), Kahoot Credit (5%), HW Credit (5%) The way to ace Brown's class is to teach yourself the main points of sections/chapters before the class. The final exam grade replaces the lowest midterm if you scored higher. Score a 75% average on HW and 85% on HW to get the 5 pts for each. Exams curved 15-20 pts

No matter how much you study, your grades wont add up. I studied for a day - got a 70. Studied for a week - got a 50. Studied for 3 hours - a 105. That doesnt add up

I'm strong in math and science typically, but this guy was awful. He is ridiculously hard, and he doesn't explain it well . . . or at all sometimes. My worst experience at NCSU.

I took Dr. Brown over the summer & was pleasantly surprised. He isn't the greatest professor, but he's not as awful as his ratings make him seem. He was interesting & he curved every exam. Just put a LOT of effort into this class. Take good notes, ask questions, & watch yt videos. I recommend taking this class with a "light" schedule if you can.

My study mate just passed on the rating site. Maybe he was not good last fall but this spring he was great. I only got a C but not because of Brown. I had to work a lot of hours and just did not have the time. I should have waited until I had a lighter schedule. Still happy with the C given really bad effort on my part.

I'm not sure why the negative feedback. I just took this class this past semester and did fine, a B+. I'm not thrilled with chemistry in general but he is very interesting and very fair. I think the bad reviews are the people who just did not do the work.

This is this first class I've ever failed, and honestly I tried my hardest. He expects you to learn from the book then come in knowing exactly what to do. Doesn't teach the topic in an understandable fashion. I understood less going out than going in. I would not say to take this course with him, wait until there is another teacher.

Phil Brown was by far the worst teacher I have ever had in all of my years of education. He elected to get rid of homework as there were some complaints of web assign grading incorrectly, making the tests a huge portion of our grade. This would have been fine if the class average for every test was an F.

DO NOT TAKE BROWN YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING. He loves to tell you stories that may or may not be about Chemistry. What he goes over in lecture will not be on the exams. He's a TERRIBLE professor.

This is the absolute worse teacher I have ever had in all 18 years of my life. He does not tell you anything about the tests and honestly does not deserve to be a CH 101 teacher. He goes off on tangents and his tests are nothing like the lectures or the textbook. Unless you already know chemistry, you will not do good in this class. DO NOT TAKE HIM

I took this class to give Dr. Brown a chance. His favorite saying is that some people are just born with talent in chemistry and never have to try, others may study all the time and get C's. You can study, do the readings, and still fail his class. The tests are 50% of the grade and overly hard. He expects a full back ground in CH- for a gen ed.
