Comment:
Vandermey is an odd guy, but that's what makes his class so great. He does not overload you with work, and is very flexible if you need a due date pushed back. Give good effort and you will do great but do not stress over his Dante class, it is played back, fun, and actually quite illuminating. He doesn't make you work so much that you hate it.

Professor VanderMey made my Westmont experience, and his class has made a lasting impact on me. He is insightful, thoughtful, and extremely approachable; he lacks the ego that is so common amongst intellectuals. You won't find a professor that is more committed to your success, should you seek his help (and you should - he's brilliant. Truly.)

For some reason, I hated his class and the subject matter but I really liked him as a prof. He always took time to speak with you personally and try to get to know you. His lectures were a tad dry and sometimes he'd go off on tangents but overall, he wasn't bad. Just read. I know its annoying but do it. Trust me. He'll appreciate you for it.

The lecture was very heavy and boring. I got a B without listening in class and simply writing the essays. I would recommend this class because he improves your writing and he is a brilliant man.

Brilliant teacher. Had him for a class on Dante; best class I've ever taken. He just seemed to anything and everything related to the topic. Loved the free-flow structure of the class as opposed to the rigid lecture style of other profs. TAKE HIM!

He's a brilliant guy, and you can tell that he has a lot of good things to say, but his approach is different than that of other teachers. I could deal with a different approach, it was just the way he treated his students in class almost every day that got to me. He will make fun of students to try and get a point across, and I just don't like it

He was one of the best teachers I had while at Westmont. His style is definitely different from that of most profs, especially those who teach GE courses and teach just to give you the bare bones. Modern Grammar & Advanced Composition was one of my favorite classes because we were allowed the freedom to write but were still offered useful critiqu

Disappointing. Would arrange meetings and not show up, or spend them talking to other students who stopped by. Very patronizing to female students. When he did bother to make a meeting he'd spend it talking about why he liked a text, never actually addressing the paper he wanted me to talk to him about.

Took him for mythology and was disappointed because he seemed to be winging it. His advice for studying for tests is VERY bad and his study guides will actually hurt you if you follow them. He'll get behind schedule and then skip a bunch of material to catch up, which is really confusing. If you ask him about essays, his answer often makes it worse

He is a great prof, he just has a different style of teaching. He was ambiguous with his essay assignments because he wanted you to think for yourself about what you really wanted to write about. He is against laying out an exact format for any essay- and "teaching" you how to write. His goal is to inspire better writing through deeper thought.

This class is so irritating! I feel like I haven't learned a thing. He kinda just gives you writing assignments and doesnt show you how to approach them at all. He's a really nice guy, but I dont feel like I'm learning anything

Tremendous professor. Inspiring man. I had tremendous personal struggles with writing my portfolio pieces, but he helped me come up with a plan of attack. Ironic that I can't even put my feelings about Dr. Vandermey into succinct thoughts. Excellent Professor.
