You will get out of this class what you put into it. He will make work for that A, but the knowledge that you will gain from his lectures and stories will give you more than most other classes could. Map quizzes are easy points, so study. His exams are killer, so study hard but after the first one you'll understand better how to prepare.

Awesome dude. Super smart. Super funny. He's been everywhere and backs up lectures with stories. Map quizzes are kinda hard but won't kill you if you study. Didn't use the book once. Wrote a 10 page paper for honors and it sucked but it wasn't too terrible. Assigns topics to each person. Kinda tough grader, not extremely so.

He's a very funny professor who tells lots of interesting, relevant stories. There was one ten page essay for the honors class which sucked but he was a fair grader.

This man is amazing. His lectures are entertaining. If you're looking for an easy grade, don't take his class. There aren't many opportunities for grades and the term paper is lengthy and he is a tough grader. However, if you're looking to learn about the world and have a good time doing it, you've come to the right place.

Dr. Hanks is an exceptional lecturer. He will be sure to cover a lot of material, but he will also include some interesting anecdote about whatever or whoever is the subject of the lecture which is usually a nice distraction from the sometimes uninteresting geography. There are only a few assignments, 1 midterm, and a final (not comprehensive).

Overall a very good teacher and he really knows his stuff. A majority of the tests are based on his lectures so notes are EVERYTHING. The lectures are fantastic though, so attending and taking notes is actually enjoyable. Pretty tough to get a good grade in this class if your essay writing and paper writing skills aren't refined though.

Professor Hanks is an expert in the subject of geography. As a non-geography major, I have enjoyed taking geography classes and Dr. Hanks class on geography of travel and tourism was no exception. Lectures were informative and extremely interesting. His tests were not easy and a long paper was assigned, but I definitely got my moneys worth.

Overall I liked his class. Start early on the research paper! He has very few grades so you need to do really good on everything in the class for an A.

The map quizzes are layed out in somewhat of a confusing mannor. The map will be divided into quadrants along lines that seem confusing and unrelated. Some points on the map may even lie on a line so you are not sure how to answer the question. The final essay is tough! Start early and get help with citations.

Dr. Hanks is a great teacher and I loved his class. His attendance policy is strict but there's also no way you can pass without going. Tests come from lectures and are fairly hard but if you pay attention and take good notes you will be fine. He is extremely knowledgable about the subject and makes it interesting & entertaining. Highly recommend.

Despite what some reviews say, Professor Hanks is a wonderful. He cares passionately about his teaching and is willing to help those who help themselves. He may get off topic occasionally in class, but his stories are very interesting. He's helpful when you visit him in his office. Take very detailed notes on lectures, & careful w/ research papers.

Dr. Hanks wasn't really my favorite. He seemed super interested in himself and his stories than his students. Also not many grades in his class so it made it difficult to get an A.

Great professor. Made the class interesting and was clear about what we had to do. Just go into office hours and pay attention and you'll do fine. He makes the subject fairly interesting, but take notes and study for the tests as their fairly challenging. Sidenote: he is rather strict on turning the paper in late, make sure you get there early!

He is very informative and knows the subject, but he is extremely unsympathetic and treats his students like children. He will have no problem cheating you out of a well earned grade only because you exceeded the allowed absences (3). Also, do not turn in anything on a thumb drive, he will NOT return it!

This was my second class from Hanks. I took him again, even though he is fairly difficult, because he is truly passionate about what he does, which is quite rare. He's been to many of the places that are discussed and always makes his lectures pretty interesting. The test comes directly from the lecture, but the research papers will be difficult.

I took the honors section of this class and loved it! He is very knowledgable, and even though the class was straight-up lecture the entire time, I enjoyed listening to him. The research paper isn't bad. There aren't very many grades, so one bad one can screw you over, but if you're willing to come to class and take notes you'll be fine.

First thing one should know about Prof Hanks is that his class is hard! You are expected to be in class every day and he does expect a research paper on rather obscure topics (Buddhism in Siberia.) However, I found his class to be very exciting and entertaining. He's a very intelligent man and he forces you to think and see beyond what is visible.

If you are interested in World Geography, this class is a complete waste of your time. He doesn't care about his students whether they pass or fail and spends the majority of the time talking about himself. Thinks he is God's gift to the faculty and constantly tells of his "wealth" and "who he knows." Does not help when asked. Advise Against.
