Comment:
This class is great if you are into reading stories and analyzing them. Gaughan is kind of bland though. He will lecture about a story for a day or two and then move on to the next story until the "unit" is done. Then you have to write a paper. These papers are the only grades you get in the class so make sure you pay attention.

Really interesting guy. Good to talk to after class, not even about the subject material. Show an interest and he will more than likely have to, which isn't that hard because he does make the lectures interesting. Very few grades, though. Only 4 written essays. Open book, though.

He has a dry sense of humor that's hilarious. I have tons of his phrases in the margins of my notebook to tell to others. His only points are essay tests which he doesn't tell you the prompt to so be prepared. Easy to get at least a B in his class. Lectures can be boring sometimes. Make sure to take him at some point if you're an English major!

Dr. Gaughan teaches well, but he doesn't give much work. 4 tests, that's all. All essay exams. He basically doesn't tell you what's going to be on them, but it's always over the readings. If you have terrible test anxiety, I wouldn't take the class.

He really knows his stuff. He goes over the books scene by scene, almost reads it to you so it doesn't take much effort to know what is happening in the books. He will explain anything you don't understand. Downsides: He has a horrible grading system. If you aren't good at writing, run all tests are 3-5 page essays. Lecture is boring, but mandatory

I liked dr.gaughan, but his lectures are very deep for a 8am class. His tests are all essay and open book. I suggest taking notes in the book. He connects the works too during the lecture and that is typically the essay.

I LOVE Dr. Gaughan. He is so intelligent and respectable, yet very approachable! His class is purely lecture, so it can get dry, but if you just chug some caffeine and come willing to listen, you'll do absolutely fine in the class. He explains the stories scene by scene, so you don't even really have to read the books. TAKE HIM.

He brings stories to life and makes the class really fun. There are no assignments other than 4 in-class open book essays. I sometimes forget it's a class, and just sit back and enjoy his discussions. This is what I want in a college literature class.

Great teacher! Have taken twice now and love his classes. Tests are in class essays where you can use your book. Have a B in this class. He is funny and puts interesting twists on readings.

dry humor but funny nonetheless, likes it when students show interest/participate a little. tests are essays with book (no notes, though) got a B but def. couldve made an A if I read more thoroughly. took him during the summer so it was more fast-paced. learned a bit, though

Gaughan was a GREAT teacher. Easy A! Assigns pages in books (Odyssey, Dante's Inferno, Book of Job, etc) to read, summarizes them himself during the next class (so you dont even have to do the reading homework), and you can use the books during his tests. Tests are just easy essays. NO REASON TO GET LESS THAN A B! Caffeine is recommended. :)

funny. four 4-6 page essays over novels are the tests and only work you do. you can get a D on the first test, C, B, then A and you'll get an A in the class cuz he grades on progress. I got 3 B+'s and haven't seen my final, so i have a feeling i got a B+ which sucks. get to use the books during the tests, so write notes in them.

Nobody has rated Gaughan in two years, so here's an update. I took him for World Lit I, and it was incredibly easy. Basically, you just read 5 or 6 books (Odyssey, Inferno, etc,) and take 4-6 page essay tests over each of them. I didn't read 3 of the books and got C's on the tests. He's boring and you'll want to fall asleep, but an easy class.

He's a very nice guy. He is helpful; however, anything you write is never good enough. He often says you are unclear, no matter how much or how clear you write. Very hard to please, but if you put forth effort, you'll be sure to get a B.

He's an incredible professor. I came in not expecting too much, but I loved his lecture style and dark sense of humor. The only grades are from the 4 essays (including the final)... so be sure and read well. You can learn a lot, make an A, and enjoy the entire ride.

Gaughan is an interesting character and he's hilarious. I loved his class, but his essays were graded hard. I had to fight to get a B. It's hard to follow what he wants, but if you figure it out, or even get semi-close, you should do great. Go talk to him regardless, he's awesome.

Professor Gaughan is excellent. His tests are not that hard if you actually pay attention in class and take notes IN YOUR BOOK. If you take notes in your book you can use them on the exams, so do it.

Gaughan is great. If you don't want to read he'll point out all the main themes from the reading, but the readings are interesting anyway so it shouldn't be a big deal. Take him for Lit if you get the chance!
