Comment:

If you aren't self motivated, don't take this class. Braaten is incredibly smart, and knows alot about the topics he teaches courses on. You'll be graded by 3 tests and a paper, and won't get grades back till at least halfway into the course. If you stay engaged in class and show up, its an easy A and he's an awesome guy.

Comment:

Braaten is one of those profs who is only teaching bc he wants to do research. He's horrible at explaining material, classes are painful as hell, & he doesn't give a single hoot about his students. I went to office hours 3/4 of the way through the semester & he didn't know who I was. He also bases grades on 3 exams & 1 paper. DO NOT TAKE BRAATEN

Comment:

As long as you pay attention to lectures and take notes, class is doable. Just three exams and a final paper, and you are done. However, he is of little help in office hours and doesn't seem to be very interested in teaching. He didn't take attendance, and he never even tried to learn our names.

Comment:

This class was really boring, and the fact that I had it at 7:55 made things worse. Showing up was a real struggle especially since he never took attendance and always put the lessons on moodle. The material could have been interesting, but he just talked about his own experiments over and over again. But overall, he's a really nice, chill prof.

Definitely would not recommend. He's a nice guy but seemed not to care that much about the class -- kept canceling and the readings were repetitive and uninteresting. Maybe he'd be better at a higher level.

Professor Braaten was overall a good professor. He works hard to keep his classes interesting to his students. Don't pay attention when people say he talks about birds all the time. Yes he brings animal studies (not just birds) to class, but they are almost always interesting and relevant. He is receptive to input, ideas, questions, etc. Thumbs up.

Animal Cognition was super boring. I got stuck in it from the beginning, but even those who were interested found it horrible. You can get away without doing the readings for each class, but both the midterm and final are difficult. If you can stand being bored to tears and will do the readings, you can pull off a high grade.

Really nice guy, but damn! the dude is Bo-ring. Then again he is talking about birds, so there what can one expect... The grading on the research paper pissed me off, since nobody (out of 50+ people) got an A.
