I took this class 20 years ago and I remember it quite well. He was an amazing teacher and passionate about what he taught. I went with him to Kanatshiohareke with the class and did a research project on the history of the Native American peoples in my hometown of Queens. Excellent class and excellent teacher. Cornell was lucky to have him.

Comment:

After many years "post Cornell" I can easily say that this professor was one of the most life changing I've ever known. Yes he is beyond passionate, and opinionated. I think those who dislike his opinions/ego are those that are giving him negative comments here. No matter. He has an incredible gift, that I vividly remember after 20 years.

Two classes in 80s. Life changing, passionate, knowledgeable. Asked students to question the material and themselves. He berated us for being in class the AM after the US invaded Panama and not protesting. Students came back late from an open test, were told they were getting a 0, he asked why we didn't stand up for them. Important life lessons!

Bob is the most amazing speaker I have ever heard! He lives his job. He is passionate (and compassionate for that matter) and he dares to speak out on issues that other profs choose to ignore for fear they might encounter departmental (or other) resistance. This man and every single one of his classes rock! Keep going, Dr. Bob!

This was one of my most favorite classes at Cornell. Dr. Bob is a unique teacher in that his purpose is not to make you memorize, etc, but to change the way you think and perceive your world. The lectures are VERY interesting. Assignments are tedious and anal, but definitely manageable. He definitely can have temper tantrums...

horrible lecturer. painful to listen to on most nights. class is incredibly easy but lectures are hard to sit through since you have to listen to a completely 1-sided view on life. if you can sit through his lectures, its an easy A but some nights it really wasnt worth it...

this class is not worth taking. the professor offers nothing but biased opinions. one of the worst class/experience at cornell. the class is easy and lecture is a joke..but it's quite eye-opening how a class as this even exists at cornell..professor's teaching style/mannerism is ZERO,. can't emphasize enough of his dubious personality

Prof. Venables is the worst. This class, despite its easiness, was not worth taking. You have to put up with his crap such as tempermental and biased grading, not replying to emails, and just general virulence. Cornell will be a better place once he retires.

He is amazing he cares about students and more importantly he is not afraid to say what he really thinks. His goal is to open our minds and view the world differently. It is nice to finally have a professor who validates what students of color have been saying from the start, racism is alive and well at Cornell and in America.

the class is easy, but the professor sorta sucks. it's a waste of time, i'd not take this class again. not worth your time sitting in his lectures and listening to him rambling on about the us government and basically mocking christianity. i don't think his lectures are so great, why wouldn't so many people skip classes?

The book for the class is (horribly) written by the professor. Hundreds of us paid for it and have only got a cd.The violently passionate professor has angrily blamed it on printers unions. He has no sympathy for unions but too much for Indians. Psycho.
