Comment:

I had this guy for statics in 1987. Almost changed out of engineering because of him, since this a required course. He is doing the engineering field at Hofstra a disservice. I went on to become a PhD and PE, so I had the talent. But I had two friends, more talented than me, switching majors.

Here's the deal. Alvarez expects a lot. He expects his students to study hard and know what they are doing. Don't like it? Don't be an engineer. Poor ratings are given by failing students, this guy actually prepares you to excel in the engineering world. Go in and try, and you will succeed and come out very informed.

Dr. Alvarez is not mean nor cruel. He sets the bar high and expects the students to perform. If you ask him for help, he will help you without spoon-feeding you still have to figure it out for yourself. He is a stern taskmaster from whom you can learn. Comment:

Dr Alvarez has always been very demanding I had him in 1972. However and as a result, he became one of two instructors who actually prepared me for success in the engineering profession. Life isn't easy, good engineering practice isn't easy either. He taught me engineering, discipline, and clarity of thought. Thank you Professor.

If you want your engineering career to come to an end take his class. He will give you an F even if you have a passing grade. The worst professor on the face of this earth. I will rather be in a sewer full of rats then sit in a classroom with him

Teaching Style: Ram information down your throat and you'd better remember it for the weekly pop quizzes. Attitude: Hates people in general not just students. Knowledge: Practically invented engineering.-Give up on trying to argue with him-you will never win. Clarity:Always answers questions with questions.-Will castrate you with one stare.

He's serious about teaching. He teaches like you're in a boot camp, which is good if you can focus in a blink. tests and quizzes are exactly from the homework. only ask definite questions, or else you will get yelled at. He's fair, just needs an attitude adjustment.

He is a very knowledgeable man that expects a lot from his students. His homeworks needs to be exact. For example, if you do not follow his format exactly for doing homework he will throw it back at you. He returned my homework because I didnt use a straight edge when I drew a triangle. Stay away unless you are ready for a lot of work.

This professor is one of the few that knows what they are doing and able to have his students leave and actually know something. Most that complain don't do any work. You'll learn a lot from his class. Take him if you can.

Very knowledgeable professor. The class is a lot of material but most people complain because they don't do the work. Often times the work is easier once you do it then what it seems like in class. He isn't as bad as most say.

His lectures are 2/3 questions (I actually took the data myself). He makes everything much harder than it need be. Most confusing class of all time. I suggest you sit quietly and copy his work accurately, otherwise you're in for a zero on the hw. Never ask a question in less you want to be crucified in front of your peers.
