One word: intense. For the subject matter, it'd be helpful if she were more welcoming to students' ideas and more trusting of their abilities as students. She definitely challenges you to think and work hard. However, I wouldn't take her again because I don't like her arbitrary teaching methods. There are many better professors worth taking.

I love this woman. She is very strict when it comes to attendance, and is very particular in what she wants with certain assignments but the challenge is definitely worth it. If you're an ENGL major I recommend taking her at least once prior to graduating. You will learn so much !

Extremely confusing and disorganized teacher. She does not respond well to people asking questions or saying they are confused. Like someone else said, she refuses to talk about racism and then makes you write about and present on topics covering racism, it's just not right and makes everyone uncomfortable. Wish I had dropped.

DO NOT TAKE HER. She is literally the worst professor I've ever had at MSU. She is so unorganized and has changed the syllabus countless times. It is a class about female black writers yet she refuses to talk about racism because it "makes her blood pressure rise." If you don't agree with her you are flat out wrong. Avoid her.

At first I wanted to drop the course, but I decided to stick with it. I'm glad I did. The books we had to read were interesting and all you need to do is ask for help and she will help you. Don't let these reviews scare you. She's not as bad as she is put out to be.

I didn't have my 1st class yet, so you can disregard the scale ratings. You may be wondering why I'm writing this. Well, I'd like to give my initial impression... WORRIED. Her syllabus makes her seem insane and totally unfair. She doesn't believe in excused absences. She makes is seem as though she frequently fails people... great.

Anyway, she is a phenomenal educator. We disagreed for three years, yet she saw in me a philosophical/racial intelligence I didn't know I had. It's as if she taught me to see what I already knew, but couldn't accept. I have all of her emails saved. It's a shame it took until college for a teacher to care enough to push me, challenge me, respect me!

Aside from forgetting our section and calling it the wrong class all semester, live by her syllabus and butter her up and you'll survive. Very boring class and she's scatter brained but in the end if you do what she wants (which isn't always easy to know I'll admitt) and do your reading you'll probably survive, and with a good grade

She's such a sweetheart, but I strongly suggest NOT taking her. She messes up everyone's grades and is VERY unclear about what she wants. The sweetest lady you'll ever meet, but not somebody you want for a professor.

If you're into S&M and have no use for your self-esteem by all means sign up for class with this professor. She's impossible to deal with and does very little actual teaching. The only right opinion is her opinion.

Do the work, come to class, engage in hot class topics, prepare your group project, attempt to do a close reading assignment JUST AS SHE EXPLAINS, add interesting dialogue to class discussion, stay outside of the box, open your mind, and you should get no lower than an A. Excellent class. Talk of racial topics difficult for those inside the box.
