Comment:

Sumiko is very sweet. She's patient and helpful. My only problem with her is that she didn't clearly explain the midterm oral so I was kind of unprepared. Also, be ready to learn hiragana and katakana on your own! Overall I recommend Sumiko.

Comment:

Sumiko is so sweet and helpful. The class was a little difficult, but no more than any other language class (and easier than French!). She is one of the better professors I've had. She doesn't assign a horrible amount of homework, only what is required for the class. My one complaint is that the final was soo ridiculously difficult!

She is a very organized lady, always come to class prepared. Vocabulary and grammar are crucial for any language. So people, quit whining and study hard. P.S. I find watching anime really helps with my sense of language. The final is a bit tough, to get an A+, you really have to master every grammar point on the textbook.

Hardest japanese class at UBC . She asked too much and was such a tough marker She did not teach at all , and gave ridiculously long and challenging midterm and final. What a horrible learning experience

There's a lot of work involved because you're starting from the basics in the introductory class, but she spreads out the workload to make it manageable. Super nice and always willing to help. There's a lab component tied to the class for oral practice and there's an oral final in addition to the written one in the main class.

Sumiko's an amazing teacher! I loved her classes and she knows exactly how much homework or new things to bring into a lesson so it doesn't overwhelm you, but keeps you on your toes. She's very understanding and helpful. Make sure not to miss class, though, because it'll be hard to catch up with the content, especially on the condensed course.

Probably the best teacher I've ever had. Genuinely cares about students like a mother, and teaches clearly. Tests are very fair. I've taken JAPN 1101 with other Jap profs at Kwantlen and Sumiko is the best hands down. Enjoyed every class she taught.

I had Sumiko sensei for JAPN 2200, 3300, 3301 and 4400. She is so wonderful and definitely one of my favorite teachers ever. Shes very understanding and helpful. Kanji has always been my weak point, but sensei always helped me out in quizes and tests to make sure I understood what the words were. Thank you for making me practically fluent sensei :)

Very knowledgeable. Understanding. Class is very fun. Best class I have ever had. I would recommend this prof. to anyone. The information was easy once I got in the flow of things. A very helpful and extremely fair teacher. Nishizawa-sensei is very nice and helpful. She gives a lot of work, but it's good at reinforcing the material. The only negative thing I would say is that because of her non-native English ability, there are some miscommunication problems at times. Overall a very good Japanese language instructor.

Shes the nicest instructor i ever had! Very easy, helpful and recommended. One thing i really appreciated was that i missed 2 midterms cuz i arrived late, and she still let me make it up during the break. What a very nice teacher! use this course as a gpa booster

she is a great, prof, she definitely knows her stuff. she is really sweet and understanding..but wow, she is a hard marker. make sure you review for the quizzes and you'll do fine. the oral exams are easy to manage if you practice.
