Comment:
You'll be called on often. The key in his class is to be patient. Everyone is confused by what he's looking for at the beginning of the term. You will answer questions incorrectly. If you become frustrated and go into shutdown mode, you will not do well. If you quickly learn not to take it personally and hang in there, it will start making sense.

Came here to say how much I hate his god damn class. Good luck understanding what he wants and exactly how he wants you to respond. Class is formulated around him yelling at students for not getting the answers correct. Calls on same people continuously. Unlike other professors, doesn't understand that subject is hard. Reading stacks up. Pray.

The most knowledgeable professor I've ever met on the subject of Contracts. Not easy -- he expects you to work -- but you will learn from him. He comes off as gruff, but he cares very much about his students. He takes the time to write and distribute some 25-30 handouts each semester to his class. That's dedication!

If you're a thinker, you'll love him. If you're a whiny little cry baby that needs things spoon fed to you, you'll hate him. He's teaches people how to think like lawyers and employs the Socratic Method in doing so. He's a great professor and I would take him again if I had a chance. I'm currently studying for the bar and am grateful that I had him

Comment:
Students' learning seems to concern him little. The class appears designed to let him put on his "ME" show. He makes it artificially difficult because that flatters him. He screams into a microphone that he obviously doesn't need because that makes him feel powerful. He knows the subject, but others offer the same knowledge without the grief.

This guy is a mysterious wizard with the law and an institution at Whittier as well as a right of passage. He does not teach contracts, he teaches you how to THINK about the law. Trust the process. I don't know how I learned contracts but I did. He is like Miagi in Karate Kid. Wax on Wax off.

Harvard Undergrad, Yale Grad. You need to consider every word from the text he assigns, and you need to pay attention to every word he says. He rarely explains the rules. Uses cases from the contracts casebook, to help reiterate the rules. The cases are already confusing which makes him seem harder. You need to think outside the box, or no success

95% of the class hated his "teaching" style and therefore ended up hating and not understanding contracts at all. The 5% who don't hate him are only so because they did well on the Fall final - but I would bet anything they still don't have a clue what contracts is about. Your Spring final exam is worth 90-95% of your overall grade- heavy pressure.

The thing about Cohen is that you'll either love him or hate him. I literally loved him at times because he's very intelligent and can be funny. There were other times, like our final worth 95% of our entire grade, where I hated him. I feel like something worked for me because I got an A in his class. So you never know.

WORST professor ever. If you get him, tell Whittier you REFUSE to pay because you will not learn anything about contracts except what you teach yourself. Waste of your time and money. Our final was 35 questions based on riddles from reader's digest and a cartoon = 95% of our grade ~ what a joke! Contracts is tested HEAVILY on the bar.

What to say about Cohen... well he does not help you undertsanding anything. You have to find all the rules yourself and understand it outside of class. The only thing he does that it useful is he makes you think on your own

Cohen is a great professor but he is hard, he expects a lot from students. He will tell you right off if your answer is wrong and he will move on to someone else. He expects you to do the reading and has quizzes everyday. He doesn't have office hours and only meets with students who do poorly on his exams.

Avoid if possible if you want to learn contracts. He will teach you very little to nothing about actual contract law. He repeatedly disagrees with decisions of the casebook...so you have know idea how to answer the finals. He shouldn't be teaching but takes advantage of his tenured position. INACCESSIBLE to students outside of class.

The guy has never practiced law. Has been a full time professor of law and it shows. He is very ambiguous and unorthodox in reaching. His teaching is like his office, dense and disorganized. Be prepared for an unpredictable exam. Some people understand him but the majority don't. I for one dreaded his class. If you can avoid him... Do so!

This Prof is more interested in understanding what you would do or come up with as a unique solution rather than what the courts would do or the rules would state. Read the text and be sure to read every case brought up in class even if it is not fully in the casebook...it may be on the final!

It's true he's not rule based, but he really encourages thorough thought. His teaching style is more in line with what I thought I would learn in law school. Even though they hyped the importance of coming to school to learn to think like a lawyer, he's the only one who emphasizes the thought process. Rule based classes don't make sense to me
