Do not take this class. The tests and quizzes were very difficult. Do not even bother studying because he likes to ask random questions. The study session also do not help. Pick a different professor.

Interesting class: very hard but I learned a lot! His lectures are word heavy and you need to pay attention to everything he says. What I did was I printed out the lectures (he has them available online) and then just followed along in class. This means I didn't have to write everything down but I could jot something down if I needed to.

For being a 100 level class, you sure need a lot of outside knowledge on the subject to understand what's going on. He seemed to not treat our class with respect and did not inspire us to learn. A plus is that there are 3 extra credit quizzes and three extra credit attendance checks at random. (quizzes seem to fall on Wednesday's).

I am not one to shy away from hard work, but this class was ridiculous. I was at 19 units this semester, and I have no idea how I'm doing okay in this class while learning nothing. Be prepared to read very text-heavy slides and memorize details. Good luck! I wish you the best.

worst professor ever. probably will never see his face since he's always facing the wall reading the slides word by word the entire time. The test are ridicouls not a chance to even get a B. The weirdest unexpected questions are asked no way to study or prepare for them unless memorize a 120+ slide power point :)

He is a a learned man but not a teacher by any stretch. He knows his stuff but struggles heavily to get it across to students, most of whom are on their phones or napping. Tests are atrocious, weirdly unimportant specifics are asked and the whole point of learning is completely lost. I was really frustrated in this class . he just reads the slides

Worst professor I've ever had. His teaching is out dated and boring. Very hard to pay attention to. He's not easily approachable. I highly recommend going to the TA help sessions. I ended up retaking this course online with Otto and was the EASIEST course ever, got an A and material is easy to understand. Schaffer just makes it harder than needed.

don't go to class it's pointless and not mandatory. study everysingledetail on the lecture powerpoints because he likes to pick random things for the test. I got an A in the class but i also studied about a week n half prior to test. He does use old exams so that was a plus. He gives random pop quizzes for xtra credit BUT they are rlly hard.

Despite what some of these other reviews say, Dr. Schaffer is a wonderful PROFESSOR not teacher. He has a PhD and he has earned the right to be addressed as a Professor. The level of detail he wishes you to learn the information is considerably higher than other classes of the same level. However, he offers considerable extra credit to offset this

Wow this guy is a piece of work. Awful lectures that make no sense and you'll probably fall asleep. Pages of PDF slides and the exams are super hard. DO NOT TAKE HONORS discussion under any circumstances. He is rude and does not respect his students nor care for their grade. Will NOT round even if at 89.7% Don't take this class.

In retrospect, this class is fairly easy to get in A in if you put in just a little of effort. It is awful the whole way but it is definitely achievable. He gives 5 pop quizzes throughout the semester that will help boost your grade so try to do your best. Tests and pop quizzes have very nit-picky questions so read carefully!

Although this man is not a good teacher in any shape or form, if you want an A in ecology 182, take it with Dr. Schaffer. His classes will bore the hell out of you but you do not have to pay attention. As long as you study his notes, you will be perfectly fine. He hands out five extra credit quizzes that will boost your grade a lot.

This guy is rough. The only reason to come to class is for the 5 random extra credit quizzes he gives out during the semester. Be prepared to read every little detail on his lecture slides because that's what the exams will be on. Lectures are crazy boring and he goes off on a lot of random tangents.

Mostly just read off of the lecture slides which dont actually teach the topics (focus too much on random facts). Be prepared to go through over 100 of these slides before each test. Super boring lecturer. No HW though/exams are all multiple choice. Plenty of extra credit offered through unannounced quizzes, which makes getting an A easier.

He stands at the front of the class and reads straight off the ppt. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does give e/c quizzes which will boost your grade a little. The exams are way too specific and have meaningless questions so unless you have time to memorize 300+ ppt notes, just memorize old exams.

Tried to ask him a question before class and he was very rude. The lectures have way too much content for 100 level class & the exam questions are very specific. There is opportunity for extra credit, but they are pop quizzes. However, he uses exams from the past so if you find the questions on quizlet or studyblue you'll probably do well on exams.

He means well, can be funny at times. But the lectures drag on. There's no textbook, 5 pop quizzes for extra credit, and 4 exams including the final. It's not as horrible as chemistry/mcb, but his pdf slides are loaded with information. For exams, study the quiz answers, homework answers, and slides.

He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is extremely boring and goes on tangents that have absolutely nothing to do with the class. Before each test you go through over 150 slides of information and then there are around 40 questions on the test. So basically you have to memorize everything or guess what will be on the test. Don't take Schaffer

AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS! This class was terrible. The only things were grade is based on are extremely hard exams and quizzes. To make it worse, his notes make no sense nor do his tests. He does not care about you; he is only there to get a paycheck. AVOID; ABORT MISSION; STAY AWAY!!
