Intensive close reading with a combination of different short stories, poems, sonnets, and books about a specific theme. An optimistic professor who encourages students to speak their mind. PS: Three Exams in total.

A sweet and caring man. Boring at times but he tries to joke around to keep the class awake. Essay questions on midterm and final and one long paper due at end of semester.

Professor McClellan is a little odd at times and his lectures move at a snails pace, but he heavily analyzes each reading. As long as you engage in class discussions and pay attention you will be prepared for the tests. Also he is willing to speak after class, and is very understanding. From what I hear his ENG class is amount the best.

I enjoyed this Chaucer class a lot. William McClellan is a great professor with a peculiar sense of humor. Make sure to listen carefully to what he says and take notes. No surprises on exams. Read your book, participate in discussions. One paper, two exams, and one easy presentation. Don't sign up if you don't like to read, analyze, and discuss.

McClellan is the best ! English department in Baruch best professors in the school. Once you get over him randomly calling on you to participate then you will see. One essay , one presentation and two exams . Take good notes and make sure to understand key points. The reading and class discussion was fun as well.

He is a stickler for time, but if you communicate an issue he is reasonable. Participation matters and he can appear to be a little argumentative however he is passionate about teaching and wants to ensure the topics are covered. Once you get to know his teaching style you should be fine. Overall a decent guy.

Professor McClellan's class was pretty interesting. I liked the reading so it was easy to keep up. He just likes to talk about the same things and like to question and break downs and find explanation to why the character in the book does what. Was a pretty good class. I would take him again.

This class really tried my patience. He drags out simple close reads to an exasperating extent and doesn't make it an engaging dissuasion of the text. Basically he makes you pull out his interpretation of the text from him and you have to spit it back to him with examples on the in-class essays. A's are possible but not soo easy.

Weird guy. Bursts in laughter randomly. But he is really cool and quite funny once you get used to him. Tests are simple. Just pay attention to what is said in class about the story and that's exactly what you write (and he likes DETAILS, really detailed details...). And for each exam, just memorize 1-2 small poems. Easy A. Would take him again.

I would gladly take him again. At first he seems a bit scary and intimidating but he's a really good professor. Show up to class because he's old school and doesn't really post things online. He's extremely helpful if you need guidance for writing papers. Just do the readings and pay attention to detail and you're good.

After you get used to his personality you will realize that he is a petty good professor. In the beginning we had quite a few quizzes and some memorization of poetry. One paper and two exams ( midterm & final ). The course is challenging but this is college. Stay away if your lazy !

If you love being ridiculed in class, take him. He rudely makes fun of all the students even if they have something smart to say. Lots of memorization and details. Overall, sucks.

There are a lot of reasons to love this guy: straightforward teaching and syllabus; surprisingly interesting class discussions and reading assignments (love poetry and war stories? cmon, who doesn't love that?); he's very good at developing your writing. Attendance is very important, as well as participation. Some assignments can be time-consuming.

Make sure you do his readings! He tends to go off topic a lot. No laptops/cell phones/kindles/machines of any kind allowed in his class. Other than that, he's a really nice guy. One midterm, one final, a final exam and a bunch of pop quizzes if he feels you aren't doing the reading. He doesn't write on the board at all so make sure you take notes.

This guy is old-school and may seem a little crazy. Has a lot of knowledge past and current events that he will talk about. Grade is based on 3 in-class essays, quizzes and memorizing poems. Class was dull until the end when he had us read sex stories. Just note that if you're not a native speaker don't take him. And no cell phones in class.

He is so nice. I am not a native speaker and I am a quiet person. I didn't like this class at firt because he liked to ask you questions, but later I found it was interesting. We read love poems and stories. He will ask you to remember some poems, but it is easy. No papers at all, just 2 midterms and 1 final~~Bravo~~

Nothing wrong with his teaching but I didn't really hit it off with him. But, I shouldn't have been in the class since it was way too easy for me. (Gen. ED. REQ.) The material covered a broad scope.I didn't like was his handling of Japanese literature; he should know more about it before trying to teach it. Heck, I know more about JPN lit.

This guy is awesome. Yes you have to write the poem and then give it a brief analysis. We had two poems, one essay, midterm and a final. He loves class discussions, and stuff we discussed was very interesting. If you can register for his class JUST DO IT!!! You won't ever regret taking his class.
