Comment:
Anne is very clear with her expectations but is very understanding and always prefers you communicate your struggles and circumstances with her. The textbook that she wrote is actually easy to read for a linguistics textbook. She emphasizes the social and societal complications of "standard English". I recommend this course for future teachers.

Class is not very engaging but you have to show up. Topics could be more fun but professor just relies on the textbook for examples or old youtube videos. Assignments feel more like busywork than actual learning. Spends most of class just listening to other students ramble on about personal anecdotes. Professor is nice and intelligent which is good

Lobeck has a VERY STRICT attendance policy. Make sure you re-read your syllabus before skipping, those days add up fast and will drop you a whole letter grade if you have more than 3.

Anne is a fantastic, caring teacher. Yes, she regularly assigns HW but they're always pass/fail and you go over them in class which helps you understand the material better. This is a 400 level class, the workload is there but there's purpose with every assignment. All exams are online. I've by far learned the most from her at WWU. Great professor.

Had Lobeck for 370, and she was terrible. Always generalized her students into the PNW dialect, which we definitely did not all have. It was frustrating & annoying when she tells you "no, you say it like this" when you don't. Because you're not from the PNW. Also gives a ridiculous amount of homework from the textbook she (surprise) co-wrote!

Class is very fun, but so much homework! Some English classes aren't worth their full 5 credits, this one definitely is.

Anne was my favorite professor at WWU and I took 3 consecutive classes with her for my Linguistics major. She is truly the best, very smart and passionate about what she teaches, very funny and kind as well, though sometimes scatterbrained and forgetful. Love her!!

She's not very clear on what she wants from you for assignments. It's a WP3 course so I expected a lot of writing, but in the syllabus she states that we only have two response papers to do and yet we've done one for practically every class period. She's a nice person overall, but I don't recommend taking this class.

This class is TERRIBLE. It's fun while we're in discussion, but the amount of homework Anne assigns is awful. The syllabus said we would each do two reading responses for credit, and we've done over 10 each so far with three weeks left in the class. Also, 15 page research papers. If this isn't the only class you're taking this quarter, RUN!!!

Homework was A for effort. Was confusing a lot of times and lectures were hard to take notes from. No textbook. However, was very enthusiastic and talked about interesting things that weren't exactly related to the subject.

Lobeck is passionate about linguistics and it shows. She's a pro on the subject. The subject matter is difficult if you don't have any experience in it like me. Lectures were jam-packed with info, but my only critique is that she's sometimes hard to follow. My notes were all over the place; however, she's a solid prof.

Really nice professor! Fairly easy class; take home tests which are open book/notes, homework from the book (she doesn't grade it- just checks it off as completed), and 2 minor research projects. My only complaint is that we had an in-class final, where we only had 75 minutes to take the test and spent the rest of the time on a group project.

Had her for Eng270 winter quarter and love her. Now taking 370. She can seem unorganized but she LOVES what she does and really wants her students to understand the material, not just memorize for tests. Very intelligent which I respect. Great attitude, helped me discover that I love linguistics! Also, technology is not her forte

She is very passionate about teaching and shows it through trying to get students involved in her discussions. Her class was fun to be in and the exams were very easy as long as you showed up to class. She honestly cared more about you understand the material than testing on specific terms. Just be prepared to watch her struggle with techology

Anne is very passionate about linguistics, but is pretty scattered in class. She's terrible with technology, but obviously cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. Overall, she's not a very hard teacher as long as you do your assignments and come to class most of the time.

Worst professor I have ever had. A lot of comments here are all about "fun" and "easy." You must love throwing your money away! Was very late every day. Yes, plays to favorites so much it makes one want to vomit. She is typical of the kind of professor so common today. Lazy, and not afraid to flaunt it.

I agree with the person who said Lobeck doesn't grade assignments, just checks for completion, and she posts assignments at the last minute. Disinterested in teaching. Doesn't have a plan. Teaches and grades on whims. For example, taking away a point for having the wrong answer and ANOTHER for "not having right answer" on a True/False question.
