Dr. Hornof is seemed to be he knows his stuff. But he has failed as an instructor. He does not have clear instruction of what he expects or what he would not like. He is a whimsical grader.

Takes some getting used to his personality. Overall a good teacher. He has no issue with putting students on the spot and roasting them in front of the class, so be prepared for that. Projects aren't too hard. Be sure to ask questions such as "what would you do?" because he doesn't always make his expectations clear.

I regret taking this class and wish that I had dropped it when I had the chance. Anthony Hornof is disrespectful, dismissive, and unhelpful. He gave us 90 pages of reading on the first day, as well as pop quizzes every week. He reads out the wrong answers in front of the whole class. He will argue with students over trivial matters.

Professor Hornof is an excellent teacher. He wants lively discussions, not students staring off onto a screen (hence why he doesn't allow laptops). I believe he provides clear expectations of students. You will learn a lot from him if you put in the work.

Disrespectful to students. Also, pop quizzes, does not allow computer use in a CS class which is odd, assigned 2 chapters of the text to read on the first day. I am a senior, my major GPA is 4.17, and I was legit excited about this class. Prof Hornof turned this excitement into frustration with his rudeness and seeming lack of care for students

If you are about to take CIS211, please beware that you will be spending a large portion of the first 3-4 weeks basically reviewing on what you should have know already. The core materials are not taught until very much into the term. Even so, you have weeks of time to digest new information.

Understands "computer science" very well. Passionate about teaching programming. Helps students learn what's going on in the background of a piece of code. Takes feedback from students to continually adjust and optimize how the material is being taught. Shows respect for students.

Professor Hornoff genuinely wants to help students, but he doesn't know how to cut to the heart of the issue and answer a student's questions. He does have a rude side to him and calls students out for yawning in class. Doesn't allow computer use in a computer science class. Hope you get somebody else for CIS 211

Comment:
I learned far more in Hornof's 211 than in 210. Projects were well designed and challenging, but do-able. If you couldn't solve them, well, CS is not for everyone. Whether he is a Python expert or answered every question is irrelevant. He knows programming, Python is well documented, and the answers to most questions were in the readings and specs.

Comment:
The professor is brilliant, but a poor teacher. Project specifications are not written clearly and concisely. The TAs were more knowledgeable about Python than the professor. Professor missed several office hours without giving advanced notice. Does not allow the use of computers in a computer science class.

The instructor does a great job taking student's questions and listening to our feedback. He encourages self-learning and gives great sources for us to learn from. He pays a lot of attention to detail and is very knowledgable on the topics we are covering.

Clearly understands programming concepts and how to write good code. The projects do a good job at teaching us/making us apply new concepts. Cares about us students, and is always willing to take the time to go over a concept and make sure someone understands it. Its good how he asks the class what we want to go over before class starts.

Pretends to care but doesn't; evidenced by the fact that he will literally not answer questions during office hours. Expect a blank stare half the time you try to ask him for help. Even the TAs say they don't know what he expects for assignments. Wastes time during lecture reviewing the rules on the syllabus instead of teaching actual material.

Comment:
Gives quizzes every Monday. Takes top 10 scores for the assignment and makes that the new top grade for the assignment. Indeed, calls people out in class for yawning. Wastes a lot of time during lecture. Will ask students for questions, and will rarely answer them in class. Slow and incorrect grader.

Dr. Hornof is one of the best professors in the department. His lectures are extremely engaging and his assignments equally instructive. He makes you work hard, but his expectations are reasonable and is always willing to work with you if you ask for help.

Comment:
The workload was quite heavy but doable. There was no defined criteria for how he grades your projects, making it difficult to get good grades. Very disrespectful of his students. I can understand no electronics in class, but to call out students for yawning or for sitting slouched is ridiculous. He was never at his office when he said would be.

Comment:
It is a shame that the first thing I can say is that Hornof is disrespectful. This is rare among the professors I have seen. He does not clearly say what he wants, or gives unrealistic expectations, then grades you down when you do not meet impossible standards. Do not take a class from him. He needs to be fired, but he has tenure.
