To be honest, my classmates like him which is great but I feel very overwhelmed and condescended to by him. I loved the material though! He chooses interesting books.

This class was super interesting, especially because I didn't know anything coming in. Prof Weiss clearly knows his stuff and is amazing to listen to in lectures. However, assignments were pretty awful. Essay prompts were grammatically incorrect to the point of being unclear and tests were ridiculously hard. Maybe not worth the interesting material

Weiss is a quirky & enthusiastic prof who is going to make you read a lot, but it's interesting material. He draws lots of connections btwn the works. Paper topics a bit vague & grading can be a bit harsh, but if you do the readings and ask for clarification/help, it's not hard to do well in this class! 2 papers, 1 midterm & final. Take this class!

I feel this professor is very overrated coming from a minor in the field. In every class, I tried to make sense of his confusing lectures. He presents his information in an unnecessarily convoluted manner. Even though I worked my butt off on his exams and essays, he grades them ultra harshly as if this is grad school.I got grades I didn't deserve..

Prof. Weiss is an amazing lecturer -- he's very animated and excited, but not in a kitschy way. He is great at explaining finer details and treats the material (and people behind it) with enormous respect and love. He opened my eyes to so many new ideas! I'll definitely be in his classes for the rest of my time at W&M -- brilliant, funny, A+ prof.

Prof Weiss is a tremendous professor, one of the best in the department (said as an anthro major). His lectures are thought-provoking, and really helpful even outside of anthro in understanding theorists. 3 hours is a long time, but totally worth it. Reading and participation are a must. Only a two papers for the whole class, and fairly graded.

Comment:
Prof Weiss is really funny and cool and the discussions are pretty interesting. But the papers are graded kind of harshly considering no one is an anthro major and the essays have little to do with the class discussions... Also the 3 hour long class drags on and stays late. I wouldn't recommend this class, but Prof Weiss is still pretty cool.

Professor Weiss is a very smart guy and knows quite a lot about anthropology (the class was medicine and culture). However, lectures were often unclear and he mumbles a lot so it's kind of hard to follow. A 3 hour long class with him seemed to drag on unless there was a lot of discussion. Overall, I would not recommend this class.

Perfect prof. for a frosh seminar. Encouraging, challenging, patient and helpful. A lot of reading, but usually interesting. Took appropriate time to explain concepts, but also helped get me to think critically. Helpful in office hours. It's a writing intense course but he is not a very difficult grader. One of my favorite classes and profs.

Professor Weiss seems so underrated on here. I've had a enough anthropology classes now to say that he is the best person in the department. The class seemed hard and like there was a lot of reading at the time, but he actually taught and made sense in class. I learned more from him than any other prof.

He is very animated, which makes class enjoyable. A three hour long class can really drag on sometimes, but Professor Weiss usually gave short breaks. There is a lot of reading, but it is necessary for class. He is a fair grader, and you will do well if you put in the effort. My favorite class outside my major. Weiss is a phenomenal professor!

Nice professor. 3 hours is too long for a class with him. Culture and Cuisine focuses much more on the anthropological aspects of "groups" and stuff instead of focusing on the food.

Enthusiastic, helpful.Hard to inderstand, though;he mumbles and speaks VERY fast majority of the time.Gives out outlines for class notes, but class is basically him talking for three hours plus discussions.Readings ARE IMPORTANT.1 midterm, 2 papers, final.Takes only 3 out of 4 grades. Prepare to read a LOT. Do not take if you have short attention span.

Very interesting class. Tends to use ummm a lot but there are no surprises when it comes to the test. Multiple choice and ID questions makes it very easy to do well with minimal effort. He may be a little dry at times, but I still learned a lot from his class.

Tends to ramble and has problems with technology. There is a lot of reading for an intro class, but it's only somewhat necessary - he basically tells you everything you need to know in class. He is very enthusiastic about the subject.

His classes are long, true but I think he lectures fairly well. Three hours is a long time to maintain interest. He repeats himself so that everything is clear (and if you daydream a bit you can get back into the lecture). Smart and coherent, he is undoubtedly one of the best professors I have ever had.

Assigned reading is interesting and not too large of segments. However, lectures can be dry and conducive to napping. Days with movies are interesting, and occasionally his manner of speaking is too.

There is a lot of reading, but the class only meets once a week. Weiss is a good professor. His lectures are interesting. Go to class and take really good notes and you'll do well. Just skim the readings. Two 5 page papers, a midterm, and optional final - overall a good class - not too hard.
