Comment:
I've never taken a class with so little structure. The professor was very disorganized and gave very unhelpful feedback. Nobody did any of the readings, except for the ones assigned to them. Most of the readings were poorly written and final paper and grade has nothing to do with rest of course.

This professor is by far the most challenging I've ever encountered. I never relied on a hornbook (Gilberts) as much as I have with this professor. Someone put it best - he is the first year law student's worst nightmare. Be prepared to learn property on your own. Get ready for lectures on his philosophies, rather than law. Bon appetite.

1 point of view all others are wrong! He's on the web so look it up if you want. The best use of class time was staying home reading cases. He calls in a random order that cycles around the class so write down when you were called on to help predict your next turn. Nobody answered all his questions for a case but he gave no advice to fix it.

This professor is not for those of you sissies who need to be spoonfed. He IS for those who want to be challenged and to think. Shaffer is not typical, but he is ****ing brilliant, and even if you don't agree with him, he will make you THINK. It's your choice what you take away from his classes; what you need to learn for Property is in your textbook and casenotes, if you really understand Shaffer, he will be sooo much more rewarding than an average ****bag lecturer teacher. again, not for dummies.

His class reminds me of undergrad--having drinks with my friends after class, that is. If you know the law before class, he's a wealth of information. If not, then you'll be treated to a rant on the invasive nature of government.

It's true that most of what you need to do well on the exams can be found in Gilbert's. But for me, this guy is different in that he helps you see things from a different philisophical perspective. In the long run, that's arguably more valuable than just memorizing a bunch of rules.

Absolutely useless. Don't bother paying attention in class. Your time is better spent playing solitaire. If he asks for a case, just read the first few lines of facts for him. Use commercial outlines.

"Informal Systems of Order"?? What the hell was that class?! I got a B for writing a paper that had absolutely nothing to do with the law (25 pages) Butler LOVES the sound of his own voice. Heavy on the philosophy. He's a nice guy an
