Comment:

Prof. Higgs used our class as guinea pigs for in-class clicker questions. She purposefully tries to mislead students to picking an answer that she will hint at and then use the fact that everybody picked it to make a point. Her tests are just as bad. She rushes through lectures and refuses to go back or slow down so the students can take notes.

If you have to take 499, try to get Dr. Higgs. She wants her students to succeed, has lots of office hours, and will read drafts. She can be a bit sarcastic but she makes fun of herself. I did not find the class hard, but it takes some effort.

Take Dr. Higgs for 499. She is not easy but she is very helpful. She knows her stuff and she does stress writing. She doesn't mind if you don't work, but don't expect a good grade. I worked hard and wish I had taken more courses from her.

Comment:

Good courses, great prof. I took world civ (good) and Africa (better). She stresses writing so it's not an easy A but it's not hard to get a B. I learned a lot and when I needed help I emailed.

I took the class for gen ed and I did expect to be bored but I have never learned so much in a college course. It was great. I worked for a B but anytime I needed help, I just emailed. Take one of her Africa courses. You won't regret it.

I agree about the coffee but I still liked the course. Some of the lectures were really good but lots were average. She needs to edit the images. I liked that she tried to connect historical events to the present. It's not a hard course especially if you do the reading.

The Class, as mentioned before is quite boring. Drink your coffee. The tests are mostly essays that are not too tough. You do need to come to class and try to do the reading to keep up. She is very intelligent and if you can fully keep up, (I sort of could) you will enjoy the class.

I suppose she isn't that bad of a professor and her class really isn't that hard to succeed in, but if you're not particularly interested in history and are just taking her for a gen ed, I wouldn't recommend her. She just made me nervous so I had to drop the class.

DO NOT TAKE HER. The most boring class I've ever taken. Her lectures are all over the place. The exam wasn't even that hard, but surviving the class is miserable.

This class is so boring. And the professor and TA's are crazy about every detail. They don't seem to realize this is a intro level class. I totally studied for the midterm and still got a C and I'm usually an A student. And Higgs is just mean. She tries to make jokes but they're really not funny. Do NOT take her!

This is my favorite class. She shows the links between China, Europe, Africa, and America. There's not too much reading but you have to do it, and also attend lecture and class.

Comment:

I always thought history was interesting, but this class really made me change the way I think about Africa in world history. You really need to come to class to get everything, but the exams and quizzes aren't too bad if you study for them. Every time I had a question I found the professor helpful and approachable. Definitely recommend this class.

Her lectures don't follow her outlines, she just rambles randomly about African history which is pretty boring. Do not make a sound at all, you will regret it. She yelled at a student for coughing and called out one of the TAs for yawning! The TAs do all the grading though, so they're the ones you have to worry about.

Her powerpoints are just images taken from the internet, her lectures make no sense, and she hates when students interrupt her even with a question. She actually got upset with a kid for coughing in lecture. Also, she only cares about African history because that is her area of expertise. If you actually want world history don't take her.

If you have even a passing interest in the subject matter it's a class you won't regret. Dr. Higgs is very approachable, helpful and has a vast knowledge of the subject matter. I added the class to satisfy a requirement and was expecting a bore fest but the class was fantastic.

She's totally from Canada and says "about" like "aboot" and etc. She says that you don't have to write down every word she says, just her main points: THIS IS A LIE. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING. Her tests are pretty easy but the history TAs tend to be completely insane. Good luck!

She is a fabulous professor with a lot of useful information. She is extrodinarily difficult but fair in her assesments.
