Unpopular opinion, but he's one of my favorite teachers here! He really cares about his students, and takes time to answer questions and give advice to prep you for what's ahead. Tbh, this class made me consider becoming a botanist bc he made it so interesting! As long as you're prepared to memorize the key points in every slide, you'll be fine!

He's very degrading and doesn't answer your question. His lectures are super heavy and exams are based on his power points. This class takes a lot of your time suggest taking it by itself or with easy classes.

He's a tough tough grader, the class is exam heavy. Study power point. Books hardly needed. The book I best recommend is the one for the slides. The rest are hardly used. There are very little things he grades that can help you bring up your grade.

I took his online class, it was not the worst, but I would suggest take in person. You will read a lot and the test are kind of hard. Grades are based on test(2 a week), discussion boards(if he grades them), and final. I was disappointed in him not grading the discussion board, felt it could have boosted my grade from a B to an A.

I don't understand why people keep saying the tests are very hard. If u study the lecture slides and give extra attention during lecture, u know how he wants u to write on his exams. Give extra attention to the word usage that he put on the slides and put those words on ur exam paper. He also makes sure you get the concept. ASK QUESTIONS!

Took his course twice. He's extremely picky with grading; write down the tiniest details from everything he says in lecture. Presentations are fairly graded and do not even think about plagiarizing, he does his research. His lab practicals are fair but you must remember every detail on the slides. He dislikes tardy students. Ask lots of questions.

Tough grader. He takes attendance every class & expects you to participate. He's a nice guy & knows a lot about science. Start studying for exams a week before if you want to get an A. People will complain about him, but it is because they don't try hard enough. Class material is interesting & you will learn a lot from him. I'm just being honest.

Tip: Act like you LOVE plant biology if you want him to favorite you&give you better grades than everyone else. He's PICKY with graph titles, graph parameters, and your group presentation. Make your presentation difficult&detailed if you want at least a B on your presentation. Ask a MILLION questions at every lecture for participation points.

Study his slides word for word and you can get an A in class. You do not need the book. He makes you feel belittled when you ask him a question because he expects you to know everything and be able to understand it all. It is a lot of information and attendence is a must, he will drop you! And you have to be on time.

Do not take this teach this is a fair warning! You've been warned take my advice and the following advice below this teacher has psychological issues! If this is your only class go for it but you've been warned you will eat/sleep/and breath biology in a matter that isn't appealing to say the least!

He's an okay teacher. His syllabus, schedule for the semester, and ppt slides are on his website so you know what to expect. For his tests, study the ppt slides, and I recommend recording his lectures because he allows it (not many professors do). The hardest part is the unknown and the report that comes with it. Good luck!

Hoyt was a good teacher. People complain that this class is hard, but they tend to be the laxy ones who dont study. If you study the power point slides you'll get an A. But warning micro is a hard subject.

I personally find no problem with his style of teaching. Memorize and understand the concepts from his powerpoints, and you'll do well on the exams. He may be unclear during lecture at times, but if you ask him to clarify further, he's happy to help. Attendance is mandatory. Keep a positive attitude, study hard, and you'll do well in his class.

Micro is a tough class. However, taking it with HOYT is the WORST decision. I had a 4.0 (with no remedial classes) until I took his class:( got a C- so you're better off taking it with other prof.

Mr. Hoyt is really better suited to some other profession. I guess he means well, but really misses the boat on how to teach. Take any other professor, except Mr. Hoyt. He managed to frustrate the entire class by not giving answers to questions in the "unknown" assignmt. I thought I would have liked Micro, until Hoyt gave me a strong distaste.

I wish I've NEVER TAKEN HIS CLASS, even though I got a B. He is rude to students. He expects you to know info. on microbiology before you take the class. He forgets we are just learning this material. He gets irritated and talks down to you when you ask him a question. He is vague and doesn't explain what he wants (like the term paper). AVOID HIM!
