Comment:
Hughes has an impressive research history but is unfortunately unable to translate that into efficient teaching. Prepare to be utterly confused in his dry lectures and spend hours trying to understand the esoteric homework problems (especially in the second half). Very time consuming and difficult to walk away with a solid understanding.

If you like to learn from lectures, avoid this professor. It's really hard to follow him: slow pace, long pauses, monotonous voice. Homeworks are easy and are similar to exam problems. Exams are fair if you prepare and do the practices he posts. His slides are useless. Learn from the Sipser book and Indian chad YouTubers and you will get an A.

Hughes doesn't want anyone to fail, but he doesn't realize how difficult his material is. Lectures felt like I walked into some random grad class. His notes are difficult to understand and towards the end they were the only resource you could use. He is a fairly generous grader though, I got an A even though I didn't understand much.

Just avoid this class if you can. It's difficulty is entirely artificial. You will waste time sorting through rambling notes that are riddled with assumptions. Just don't. Save yourself.

Rambles during lectures. Book and internet are not of much help as a lot of the material is varied in some ways. Homeworks aren't too bad as there example homeworks with solutions. Advice would be to ask questions during lecture or email him as he'll be happy to respond. Tests are a substantial part of grade so review HW and show up to review

He's a nice person, but not a good professor. His class notes are not comprehensive at all. Explanations are mediocre at best. You basically have to teach yourself everything.

I honestly don't understand why his rating is so low. He's very friendly and a fair grader. It's a difficult class, but that doesn't make him a bad prof. He could make lectures a little easier to digest if he tried dumbing it down a little, but if you focus and ask questions it can work. If the lectures aren't your thing, YouTube is a reliable alt.

When i think back through my time as an undergrad i had to stop and think, who killed my interest in my major the most? And i thoroughly believe the award goes to Hughes. Lectures are scatterbrained, uninspiring, and bland. Notes are useless, lecture is useless, enjoy the textbook and i sincerely hope you can get out alive.

Dr. Hughes is a really nice professor and I wish this meant he was a really good professor, but sadly it doesn't. He tries his best to explain the material, but this material is very complicated. His handwritten notes are illegible and his powerpoints are difficult to understand. I recommend the textbook, as Sipser explains very well

Lectures become extremely difficult to follow due to his pace. You must be willing to learn on your own. Do yourself a favor and go to his or the TAs office hours. Midterms based heavily on samples and big curve on insanely difficult final--98% despite the material being some of the most difficult I've ever learned.

Really knows his material well, you just need to come to his office hours and pay attention in class. Assignment specifications were sometimes unclear and nonstandard when it came to grading with the TAs. Do not lag behind in course material or you'll probably fail

He is SO unclear in his expectations. He goes off on so many tangents that you can't understand his lectures at all. He knows his material, but cannot convey it to his class in the least. His only saving graces were a good TA (a really good TA...thanks RP) and his exam reviews were really good...exams were almost identical.

Terrible never taught us a single lecture. Had his postdoc student lecturing. Neither Arjun Nagendran nor Prof Hughes were any help in understanding the concepts. Their expectations were far beyond the beginner level. Even the TAs were confused and frustrated. The only students who were able to excel were ones with previous knowledge in JavaScript.

He only showed up for class three times throughout the entire semester, and on those occasions took nearly 20 minutes of class time to talk about something entirely unrelated. He had one of his TAs teach the lecture, but Hughes himself did the grading, without any knowledge of how the class was doing. The worst professor I've barely seen.

He's pretty good and clear about what he's talking about. His notes are ok...only he can read it. Exams are easy since he gives good reviews.
