Comment:

Took Theory of Programming languages. Awesome course. Super Super hard. Only cause the subject is so abstract. Skalka tries to help everyone understand. Homeworks are challenging but not unnecessarily hard. Tests are open book. Answers quesions through email. I have not tried to meet outside class. Only take if you like abstract math!!

Class is purely project based - one iOS/Android app. Seems like it'll be a class I get an A in, but a lot of work has gone into my app. Lectures aren't very useful, but attendance is taken and mandatory.

Comment:

Course was a lot of fun and Skalka is crystal clear about what topics you need to know. Grades were fair and the course was kept entertaining. I would love to take another course with Skalka just for the entertainment he brings.

Comment:

Good at lecturing if it's a topic he's interested in (123: good 265: not so much). His way of stating things is sometimes too formal for its own good and can cause confusion (i.e on test questions or when giving help on homework). Would recommend for CS 123, not sure about other classes though.

Comment:

CS 123 Programming Langauges. Professor's lectures are very interesting. He knows what he's talking about and is always willing to answer questions. However, when the time comes for Testing, which is always open notes, and worth 60% of your grade, the questions seem as if they're written in a different language and notes don't help.

Being in Skalka's class, I had benefit of a professor who knew what he was talking about. However, the class either needs a translator, or a pocket manual for understanding what he's trying to get across.

Great teacher with a knack for making things understandable. Tends to zoom too far out of the big picture, leading to a bit of an abstract mess. Useful course, HW's were challanging, grading was fair, and he is always willing to help.
