Comment:

Dr. Whalen is a very nice guy who clearly knows his stuff, but he isn't a very good prof. His lectures were deceptively simple in comparison to his exams, and a little confusing, so I self taught from the textbook. No HW's or clickers, just 3 exams (None are dropped). The grading system is not at all clear. HUGE CURVE!!!!!

Comment:

A sweet old guy who clearly enjoys teaching, but has past his peak. Not super well organized, 3 exams are the whole grade, confusing in class. His review sessions (when we actually had them) were helpful. Defiantly sit in the front row, teach yourself before class, and ask as many questions as you can to help you understand the material.

He knows his stuff and he is a really nice guy who wants to give you as many chances as possible to pass, but I didn't get much out of his classes. Easy to fall asleep during class or be confused into a coma.

he was a very good teacher...he helped me a lot through orgo..n we all know that orgo isn't the easiest subject out there. i went to his office hours n he actually took time out to explain things to me. he's a fair grader and his exams are tough if you dont' keep up with the material. i enjoyed having him as a professor for orgo.

Dr. Whalen is really a good teacher. The material is confusing but he goes out of his way to help out. One thing I really liked about his class was you actually had time to finish the test and go back to check things over. He teaches at a very relaxed pace.

Whalen is very smart but when it comes to teaching, he's not the best at clarifying things (not saying he's bad at it). But the great thing about Whalen is, he's very nice and extremely understanding. He doesn't drop exams but he gives you so many chances to show him that you know the material and if you do, you can end up getting an A in the class

his lab lectures are pointless and confusing. his exams are unreal as far as some of the questions are concerned. and his grading system is clear to only him. even my ta said he was confusing! if you have him for lab i hope you have a realy good ta.

Horrible, horrible prof. He expected you to not only read ahead, but come to class with a complete understanding. He pretty much lectures right out of the book, so you might as well just read and skip class. His answers to questions were never helpful. Didn't learn a thing.

confusing teacher and class. never really knew what he was talking about but it wasn't hard. hardly went to class, and still got a B. HUGE GRADE CURVE. If you just read the book then you will do fine cause the tests are right from the book.

My friend and I dreaded the class, and felt like it was a waste of time. I got nothing out of the jumbled lectures. He seems smart and wants you to do well, but the material is hard and he doesnt explain it. Plan on learning then its your responsability.
