Comment:

Prof. Velleman is brilliant, understanding, and kind. He was always clear in lectures and attentive to questions. His office hours were useful, but he was very cautious is giving hints as he wanted us to figure it out ourselves. Exams were brutal, but he progressively tried to be more merciful. The class was very worth it overall.

Comment:

Prof. Velleman's lectures are clear and efficient. You will often find yourself copying things down and digesting them on your own later, but don't hesitate to take advantage of his office hours, which were, for me, even more helpful than class. Tests are reasonable but sometimes contains trick questions.

Comment:

A brilliant man and provides the most systematic and clear lectures you will probably ever receive. Notes are great - never needed the textbook at all. Homework is "optional" but it's hard to keep up with the pace without doing it. Everyone that didn't do homework fell behind and did badly on the exams. Exams were very straightforward and even easy

Prof Velleman is an absolutely fabulous teacher. He explains everything so clearly and his writing is legible. He is the third mathematics professor I have had at Amherst and by far the best. He is always available to help in office hours. I found that I respected him so much that I wanted to work hard!

Let me tell you a little story about Dan the Man. Math wasn't my strong suit. But merely basking in his presence makes one feel like one could understand the universe if he were teaching it. Clear. Logical. Very hard, but always clear and logical.
