Every meeting we use the textbook, and he pushes for students to engage both with him and other students in Chinese. He assigns a lot of homework, but it's all really helpful for really learning and understanding the language. He gives great feedback and is more than happy to go over grammar points again if asked to. I absolutely recommend him!

Okay, if you are taking Japanese, it will not be easy. If you are willing to TRY and PARTICIPATE, he will help you as much as an instructor is allowed. Just show up ready to achieve and he WILL teach you so that you are prepared and knowledgeable enough for Japanese 2. Ganbatte kudasai! Do the homework and you will be prepared for his quizzes. 39!

Great Japanese teacher! He teaches beyond what's in the book which is harder at first, but makes the assigned book work very easy! His method of learning a foreign is very good! My only warning is his dry humor, and heavy accent. Other than that, great teacher! Will take his Japanese 2 class next semester :)

This man is that one shining diamond that unfortunately resides in the prison like walls of El Camino's humanities building. Prolific professor, passionate, intelligent, charismatic. Cares about all his students and is great at breaking down the components of Asian languages for newcomers to understand. I will miss him dearly and his classes.

Took him 2014 Spring. He tells you what will be on the test, which is always from the homework and notes! Just do the homework to memorize characters and understand grammars. Attendance is mandatory! He's willing to help and makes everything clear! I recommend him. I actually improved a lot on my Chinese skills and now I can make my own sentences.

a VERY difficult teacher if you do not have any prior knowledge of the language. Expect to do a LOT of reading and work at home - he expects you to read the txtbook chapter at home and study it, and come in knowing it for class, where he will make sure you know it. Ignores students who know the answer-likes putting students who DONT on the spot!!

Drills you until you get things down right and the correct way. I'm taking J2 right now and its wayy harder! But still, great teach. "Show me you can play tennis"

Mr. Shan is a great teacher. You could easily understand what he's saying and he's very helpful. This class takes a lot of memorizing and the tests take a lot of studying. However, he does not come down hard if he sees you're struggling. You will definitely need the book and a lot of flash cards. Good Luck!

Don't expect this to be a free GPA raiser. Actually takes some effort and practice. 5 tests, last counts for x2. Thats it. Should revise his teaching plan, HW mandatory. He deducts the pts from your test if you don't do it. No quizzes, should be more to your grade than just test scores. Class is interesting however, just takes practice.

His teachings are excellent. Pay attention to details in his class and you will pass the class with a C or even above. Many people in my class got A's because they are interested to know more about language from him. You must appear on quiz days to get points. There are 4 quiz and 1 oral presentation. You must commit yourself to learn the language.

This man is a gentleman and a scholar, and most likely a demigod. He is quite possibly the greatest teacher in existence, certainly the best at El Camino. I have no idea why he deigns to teach at this gritty school instead of a proper university. My only complaint is that his classes are too short. I've taken all of his language classes.
