Baeyen is a good teacher but all you do in his 201A class is listen to him read essays of past students and let you see examples of what he expects from you. A total of 4 papers are due throughout the semester

Mr. Baeyen is an excellent teacher. He truly understands literature and its value and is superb at communicating it. I'd already had some fine teachers help me with Shakespeare, but Mr. Baeyen makes it very accessible. He grades essays for what is important: what evidence from the text you provide for your argument. He's also very kind.

Really nice and super helpful! I took him for 201A and loved it! His 201A course is based on four separate papers on whatever you choose so if you love writing, this is the English class for you!

Mr. Baeyen's class was more boring than anything. I fell asleep in his class for the first and only time I ever have. If you like listening to classmate's essays all class long take this class. He is good for helping writing technique but that happens at the beginning of the semester mostly.

To put it this way, Mr. Baeyen is just a super cool guy. He is extremely helpful and his class isn't boring (and I'm not a huge fan of older literature). His class can be challenging but everything he expects in the assignments is completely realistic and the exams are on material he covers in class. I HIGHLY reccomend you take his class.

Such a great guy. He is so sweet and good natured I enjoyed talking with him. His lectures were interesting and easy to join in on. His tests are challenging yet very fair and he is very willing to explain anythign you don't understand. Highly recommend him.

Great guy. Great explanation of stories. Makes material accessible. REDICULOUS expectations for our last test & paper. This was super discouraging & turned my feelings about the class. I'm not sure its possible for non English majors to do do well in this class. No textbook, was great. Good luck!

Dennis Baeyen is a really nice & intelligent professor. He's helpful & he really cares about his students. He really wants your creativity to flourish, so you don't spend much time learning about grammar & other technicalities. He also lets you redo your essays, which is a plus. He's definitely one of the best English teachers at Cuesta. Take him!

I also had him for the Shakespeare class. He is very interesting and brings a lot of knowledge to it. However, I would strongly advise ANYONE interested in attending this class to have some solid analytical skills in your arsenal. Also, the final exam was ridiculously and unnecessarily difficult. I'm just a transfer student, not a PhD candidate.

He is a very nice, interesting teacher. I have him for Shakespeare. He really brings a lot to it and makes it interesting and enjoyable. He does find some peculiar connections and expects his students to do the same. I think there's a method to his madness. :)

As the previous reviewer said, Dennis Baeyan = Clint Eastwood (good/bad/the ugly, dirty harry, gran torino) Though he looks/sounds like C.E., he is kind-hearted and kinda ditsy. He's interesting to listen to and if you pay attention, you will learn some interesting literary techniques (selfish to selfless, man vs environment, conflict) Take him!

I took his Shakespeare class and enjoyed it, for the most part. He's not the most exciting teacher, but lectures weren't bad and were usually pretty funny. Goes off on wild tandems frequently! Papers were not hard in this class, if you put in the work/got the word count you got an A. I missed a few classes and was still fine.

I've had Dennis for 1A and 1B. I dreaded 1A, but he was an amazing teacher. He makes you write GOOD essays, you know, something your friends wouldn't mind reading. He is interested in the savory details of English and not so much the often dreaded techincalities. Definitely take this man's class if you can, he's totally worth it.

This teacher is one of the best teachers i have ever had! I was never good at writing essays but he always finds the positive part of your writting and focuses on that. He is very into the creative part of writing. I learned so much from him and taking this class. Take him if you actaully want to learn something in an english class.
