I took figure drawing and portrait drawing. If you want help with your work you have to ask, a lot of people don't get that. Fred Dalkey was the best art teacher I have ever had- mostly because he stayed out of my way most of the time, and the comments he made about my work improved its quality 10 fold. No assignments, just practice and grow. :D

Prof. Dalkey is a very interesting teacher. It's amazing how many facts, dates, and artist he can remember off the top of his head. The class was fairly easy and he does not require any textbooks, all lecture. There were a total of 5 tests and I got an A on every single one. There is no midterms or a final. He takes attendence everyday.

Mr. Dalkey is a very laid back Prof. He will let you use your notes on quizzes (if the class acts right), & he is intelligent when he explains the artist. He has a good sense of humor too. Also, save all your notes bcause he will test you from paintings when you first start class. Anybody should be able to get an A in his class.

I completely agree with what the person said below. However, I also want to add that Prof. Dalkey is a great person with regards to learning what is important - given the time you have in his class. You should take his class any way you can, even if he lets you sit on the floor. Trust me, it would be worth it. And, he has the best sense of humor!

Extremely easy A+. Tests are just memory tests based on facts about the pictures shown. However, I must warn you, this class is EXTREMELY boring - especially if you aren't into Art. If you don't mind being bored out of your head for 16 weeks in exchange for an easy A course. Take Dalkey.

Dalkey is WAY overrated ... his paintings are great, but his teaching sucks. It seems he could care less about his students. If you want some help with your art, you basically have to beg for it. Still, he is an easy grader, so if you are more interested in getting an A and watching him paint than you are in your own art, you'll like his class.

Fred is a legend!! He is a superb artist and teacher! I've learned a lot from him. Very laid back and really knows his stuff. I have to agree that the grades come out of no where, but as long as you show up to class and take interest you'll do just fine. It's best to chat and ask for advice from him so he'll know who you are. :)

EXCELLENT class, but grades are mysterious and strange. Mr. Dalkey occasionally takes roll, and if you happen to miss on one of those days, you are graded down, is my best guess. He also had fans and favorites in class. You do not know your grade until you receive it after class is over.

Comment:

Very gentle and quiet teacher. Teaches some basics and focuses more on practice than instruction. You'll have to ask for his input if you feel your drawing is not turning out the way you want it. Easy finals, no study. Great artist. Personally, I prefer Melanie Marchant's ART300 class. I was one of the best in Dalkey's class because of hers.
