He really knows what he's talking about. However, if you want to pass his class YOU HAVE TO STUDY! There's no getting around that. The only thing I didn't like was he counts off for some of the simplest things. Like spelling; and when you're dyslexic like I am, that can really hurt your grade. Overall a great teacher but very nitpicky.

Attendance isn't mandatory, but he does give 4-5 pop in-class essays. STUDY or you will fail. Get the "slide guide" that he shows you, it helps so much & he counts it as up to 6 points extra credit added to your final grade!! He's a great guy, he really cares about his students, & he really loves his job. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

makes you work for your grade. hes very fair and helpful if you have any concerns. good study habits are recommended as his class requires a lot of info to be memorized. not just a lecture class you can skip, he does pop up essays and those are used for attendance! overall a great guy.

Dr. T is the most knowledgeable history teacher I have ever had! He is by far my favorite teacher at UTC. He is hard, but once you know what he expects, it's a whole lot easier. He is always willing to work with you, and replies by email quickly. He is an amazing teacher. Definitely your money's worth. You will learn so much from his classes.

Very content heavy class. Lots of in-class essays, 2 huge quizzes, a midterm, a large paper, and final. Getting an A is doable if you really focus. He loves what he teaches which is very encouraging. Difficult grader but gives extra credit through the semester. You cannot fall behind or he will leave you behind. READ READ READ.

Townsend is one of my favorite teachers EVER!! He has more knowledge about art and history than anyone I have or ever will meet! He genuinely cares about his students in every aspect! His classes are hard, but worth it. I've learned so much in every one of his classes that I've taken!

I absolutely love Dr T! As a non art major, I learned SO MUCH. Other teachers in this course make you memorize the time period, year, artist, etc. Not Dr T! Just the time period! His quizzes are easy and he tells you exactly what is on them. He's so knowledgeable and knows EVERYTHING about the subject. Will be taking another class he teaches

Dr. T is a great teacher! He is very helpful, very funny, and definitely knows what he is talking about! I didn't care for art prior to this class, but he has made the semester enjoyable! Bar none one of the toughest courses due to the memorization of date, period, location, and name of art pieces. Amazing professor but as a non-art major, I would have loved to audit this class. Grading is scary. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! ALL OF IT!DO IT EARLY! Awesome class.

He is a great, lively, funny professor and he makes class enjoyable. He is very knowledgeable about art history and has lots of world experience. It can be tough to get a good grade, but if you put in the work and have half a brain, you will do well and earn his respect, which feels great from such a cultured man.

really knows what he's talking about and you can tell he's been there. Very clear instruction with slide shows and explanation. However, the identification quizzes are VERY DIFFICULT you have to know the name, style, year and city of each piece. those hurt my grade because it was too much information to absorb. but does give extra credit.

Gavin has been teaching art history for a while but you wouldn't know it from his lively, passionate lectures. Many of his presentations include photos of amazing old world art that he himself took. Memorizing slides is a pain, but he's pretty forgiving on grading and offers plenty of extra credit opportunities. BRING YOUR SLIDE GUIDE TO CLASS!

townsed is great! it can be difficult in 214 and 215 to memorize all those dates, but you come out of his class and really understand the history or art; it's pretty awesome. also, if you take your notes in the slide guide for 214 and 215, you'll get that done much easier.
