Comment:
Lit Crit was HARD. Do the reading, go to class, take notes. He also expects you to participate in class discussions. I was shy and didn't say much, but because I did well on the tests he got that and didn't push too hard. All the English Majors complaining about having to read, maybe re-think your major. It's a tough class, but I learned so much.

Look. This guy knows what he's talking about. He's a very smart guy. But his lack of respect and understanding for his students is truly sad. He doesn't know how to actually help his students or validate them. It was a truly disappointing experience. He's a very hard grader, and participation is everything. Hope he grows to be better.

He's an annoying professor who is extremely smart and well versed in poetry, but with that being said, he doesn't see things from any other perspective other than his own. A tough grader, we're only graded on a few assignments, the class is lecture heavy, and all of his notes are so unorganized. He thinks his class is the only class you're taking.

Great professor! Might be a little intimidating during the first class session but is honestly a very nice guy that just wants respect. The last comment is spot on. No textbook required, just a simple poetry book because thats where his focus is.

Really nice professor, cares for his students. He gives 3 quizzes and an optional final paper to boost your grade if you need to. He also would add an extra 10% to your grade if you show him that you are eligible to vote (he likes to promote students getting involved with the election!) His quizzes were a little difficult, but not impossible

Had him a while ago for Victorian Lit. Very clear about grading & requirements. If you want help he's willing to work with you. That being said, don't try to b.s. this guy, he's far too intelligent for that. The lectures & discussions are very in depth & his comments on papers are insightful. You'll have to work, but it was one of my fav classes.

For someone teaching in this school for over 10 years, you sir are doing a lousy job. He gives the 1st exam 1 week before withdraw date. Also, the class is dedicated to pure lectures. Half the class failing the first exam should say something about ANY professor. No ordinary student can thrive in this class if you don't read all day/ everyday.

The worst thing is LitCrits a must for all English majors to take since it concerns theories, and he did not teach me a thing about them! Very rude and he's truly an incompetent professor. Read his readings twice and highlighted things for discussion, but what kind of discussion? The government of different countries?? I think not! waste of money!!

After reviewing a few of the past comments, I can see how some people think he's either the nicest or meanest professors. Overall, I thought he was an great professor; one of my all-time favorites. I've learned so much in this class and as long as you're willing to read and come prepared to discuss in class, there should be no problem whatsoever.

Maertz is the man, if you're lazy don't take him, if you want to learn about critical theory then take him. Gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit because his tests are hard. Went from a 75 on both tests to getting an A because of all the extra credit.

Don't expect to take organized or structured notes in his class! Very disorganized and political. His tests are very difficult and he assigns a LOT of reading. Unless you truly enjoy Plato, Socrates, & etc. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He HATES cellphones & electronics & HE WILL EMBARRASS you if he sees you with any devices as such. AVOID !!

It's not hard to do well in his class! Just as everyone said, READ the textbook. It is a lot of material, though. He provides extra credit and is willing to help. The IQ quizzes are relatively easy. He's really interesting, but he's sort of full of himself. I wish I had more respect for him, but his ego was sort of a roadblock.

I have mixed feelings about him. Sure, he's an intelligent guy and gives out extra credit, but he's condescending and half of what comes out of his mouth doesn't pertain to the texts. I was SO disappointed that we barely learned about theories...I suppose that's my main complaint. The texts were interesting, but I wanted more about the theories.

Gives out a lot of reading, but if you stay on top of your reading, there's no reason why you shouldn't get an A on your in-class essay exams. Great guy, and always willing to explain difficult concepts to you. Just DO YOUR READING.

Professor Maertz is the most engaging English professor I've taken here at St. John's. His ability to lecture engagingly on literature is unparalleled. He is intense but friendly & approachable. He is very intelligent & suggests ideas about literature that would never occur to the typical reader. Fairly graded in class essays encompass your grade.

He's a great teacher if you're looking to learn, but if you just want to get by in school then don't take him, he's too intelligent for you to try and bullsh!t him. If you like classes with discussion and personality, then he's great. He's from an academic background than most other professors. Don't take him if you're thinskinned or closed minded.

Romantic Poetry class--People say he's tough but play your cards right and you'll be fine. Just sit in the front and LOOK like you're paying attention. Participate if you can, he grades objectively, which can work out in your favor. He's funny, but has a bad temper. DON'T come in late or make a lot of noise, you'll do fine.

Maertz is a cool guy and he is very intelligent, but he expects his entire class to be the same way! He treats us all like were Harvard Grads and not SJU students. 99.9% of us are forced to take the class and the work load is insane! YOU MUST READ! Its hard and thick, but you can do it!! DO TRY TO AVIOD!

okay, the course isn't done yet...but I must tell you this guy is a JERK! He is rude, demeaning, and he absolutely does not know how to communicate with people. He basically told us one day that b/c were at SJU and not Harvard were not cultured and that we wont have any oppurtunities after graduating. He's really smart...but a complete JERK!
