Comment:
Stoneback was interesting. He had a syllabus crammed onto one page that is basically unintelligible and does not answer questions when asked; he will either a) change the subject or b) say it's on the paper given, even though the paper is not clear about what he wants. He also talks mostly about himself and assumes students know everything he does.

Terrible. The most self obsessed professor in the world. Expects all students to have photographic memories. Also, spends 70% of class time talking about himself and how great he is, and the rest on the works.

Stoneback is definitely knowledgeable and a good professor. My only criticism is that he is very intimidating and difficult to approach. This stuff comes very easily to him and he almost laughs at students who don't understand it. He only allows 3 absences and after that, you fail so watch out for that.

The class is just the professor talking, occasionally asking the class questions like "y'all ever been fishing?" Utter contempt for anything created after the 1970's. Doesn't use computers. Passion for 1920's lit merely alienates contemporary students from nostalgically idealized past. Tests and assignments are infrequent and obscure.

Before this class, I ever had a professor like Stoneback. His passion for literature shows through his lessons and stories. While it may seem overwhelming, it's important for class assignments, and especially to a career in English. Whenever I left his class, I felt more excited about my path as an English major. I couldn't recommend him more.

Stoneback is the best college professor I've had. Though lengthy, his stories are inspirational, funny, and crucial to fully understanding readings. He's a genuine soul who cares about his students and the integrity of literature. I found it one of the most worthwhile parts of my education, and definitely crucial as an English student.

Stoney is the most valuable part of New Paltz's English department. His teaching of The Sun Also Rises is unbeatable. His class truly changed my life and redefined my taste in literature, and he is indefinitely inspirational which changed me as a person. To experience his class is the definition of gaining an education.

Although he is a great professor and has a lot of great stories, his tests are VERY difficult and require you to read every assignment. He is also very intimidating and a lot of times I felt stupid in his presence. If you're willing to work for it, it is a great class and although I never got any papers back, I think he graded fair and had a curve.

Comment:
He's EXTREMELY knowledgeable; the way he analyzes literature is unlike anything you've seen. He was raised in a different time, so I trust his authority on books, but the fact is, he's amazingly pretentious. He is a name dropper and a cocky, self-appraising know it all, but his stories ( although exaggerated) are interesting. Tests are hard as hell

Stoney is, in my opinion, an amazing proferssor. He spends most of the class telling outrageous stories about his life (he's pretty much immortal). He seems intimidating, but he's very helpful and he will make you a better writer. I would deffinitly take him if you can. Course load is easy to handle and he is passionate about what he teaches.

I can confidently say that Stoney is the best professor I'll ever have. His stories are layered, instructive, and entertaining. A huge component of his class is being a good listener. If you do not listen to him, then you will not succeed. Like Hemingway, Stoney wants you to get to know the values on your own, and if you listen to him, you will

I was really excited in taking American Lit 2 because I had read all the comments about him. I saw that MOST were positive and (as usual) I ignored negative ones. I ended up hating the course and learning nothing. He was pretentious and his exams are EXTREMELY hard. If you decide to take his course after reading this good luck.

Stoney is the definition of The Man. He is a fantastic story teller, mostly because he has done literally everything on Earth. A little intimidating (especially if you're a writer), but he is very helpful, and an overall great professor. I am so glad I took his class.

Phenomenal story-teller, just listening to him 3 days a week will make you smarter. Not discussion-based, the point is to absorb his knowledge. You won't get a better reading of the Sun Also Rises anywhere. If you are serious about literature and writing you must take his course. Don't hesitate to talk to him about your ideas after class

Stoneback reminded me why I love literature so much. He's brilliant and he has so much wisdom to offer. He is the world's leading scholar on Hemingway. If you pay attention in class and do all the readings you'll get an A. Best of all he loves his students. Anyone who doesn't like this class shouldn't study English lit. This man changed my life.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the man...not sure if extremely pretentious, or just very bright. Maybe both. Anyways, for an honors class, it was extremely easy, although his tests are just quotes so you should do the reading. He goes off-topic for 90% of the class, so we didn't even finish the last month of our syllabus.
