Awful for general chemistry. His lectures were all over the place and he didn't seem to have a clue what our chem background was as freshman (probably because he mostly teaches upper level classes). Halfway through the semester, I stopped showing up to lecture and taught myself through yahoo answers and the online HW - my grade improved.

Dr. Mayne is such a funny and nice man. Unfortunately he is a genius and teaches like one. he is very bad at teaching general chemistry to freshman, given that he teaches grad students normally. In this course you definitely have to put in a lot of outside work but it is possible to pass.

I struggled in the class a lot. I put in probably more than 10 hours a week outside of class studying and going to tutoring and working on hw. Going to class barely helped. The chem frat is the only reason I passes. I feel like I put in the effort for a B or B+ and I barely got a C+. I even took honors chem in hs and did fine. Super hard class.

Does not explain the material well. When went to his office he treated me like I was not smart and basically told me to change my major.

Would absolutely not recommend! He spends a majority of his time in class reviewing simple things, and spends almost no time reviewing the things that are complicated. Hope you like taking notes outside of class! He does not give you any time to copy down notes or any examples at all. I emailed him for help and his response was so rude I cried.

Don't even bother showing up to class. He has no idea how to teach an entry level class, assuming that we should know everything already from high school. During lectures he skips around and barely explains anything. Lab is the easiest part, but it counts very little. Exams consist of nearly your entire grade.

Comment:
Prepare for a painful time if you are taking chem405 with him. Like other recent reviews have stated, he has no clue how to teach an entry level class and the lectures are useless and boring. The exams are very unpredictable, but if you can teach yourself the material well, you'll probably be okay. The labs weren't too bad.

Literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Treats the class like he is teaching a graduate level class, expecting us to know higher level concepts without him even teaching it to us. Consistently admits that he didn't teach us things, but still puts them on the test and expects us to know how to do it. Has no idea how to teach a class.

Howard Mayne does not know how to teach an entry level chemistry course. He has not taught the class in approximately ten years, and is unable to teach the class proficiently, claiming that he does not want to insult our intelligence, and claiming we should know advanced chemical concepts from high school which we had not been introduced to before.

I'm not even in his class but I might as well be based on how I have to teach a dozen kids every homework he assigns since he doesn't actually teach anything because he "doesn't want to insult his students' intelligence." I've never met the man but I sure do hate him.

He cancels class a lot and he's hilarious. If you argue about a quiz question, he'll delete the question or reason with you and all quizzes have extra credit. Most questions are totally easy and reasonable and the assignments aren't difficult either. Just show up and pay attention and youll get an A

Mayne is awesome. He is enthusiastic about chemistry and is the only teacher that can make me interested at 8:00 AM. He's very funny and his class is relatively easy.
