Wonderful professor! Yes, you need to come to class so if you are prone to ditching, this would not be for you. Lots of reading but tests are easy. Mr. Hawes is very knowledgeable, and willing to help with any questions you have.

this class required too much time for a gen ed class. he gives writing assignments and a ton of reading. pop quizzes in class and his exams are crazy!! have to read 2 books on top of the two text books he requires. would advise people to not take this if looking for an easy gen ed

This guy gives too much homework for this class. He likes to talk just to hear himself talk. He has long test with lots of information and he will give a pop quiz over material he just went over. There is lots if reading and papers in this class. I made a D in this class and I love history. I would avoid him if a I had other options.

I would agree with the previous comment. He also gave too much in our class. I love History, but it is just a pre-req. I got an A, however, I read a lot of history. 4 2-3 papers, 3 tests (2 long essays and 10 identify), 8 quizzes counts 5, and two book tests. Avoid if you are not in love with history!

This class has an incredible amount of workload for a pre-req. I have never had such a demanding professor, even for upper division classes. He makes you read a ton of material and his tests are difficult because they are all essay. However, he gives you a study guide with between 6-8 possible essay questions, but does not let you pick which one yo

Great teacher. Easy grader. long lectures. A lot of reading but if attend class it's an easy A. Test are in class essays, but the class usually chooses the exam quest. He allows students to have 1 page of notes while taking the exams. I stopped reading half way thru the semester and I still got an A. If you fail his class you have serious issues

Reading the books is important! We take notes everyday and about 7-8 quizzes but the he only count the top 5. I wouldn't say this class is hard but it requires a lot of reading. Overall a good teacher. He also gives out study guides for exams; it really helps!!!

This class was average, I would avoid him, but it's not a tragedy if you end up with hawes. Never releases early. The tests come straight from the study guides, but the study guides are nothing like the lecture material. At least in my class he lectured over the material we had just taken a test over. So the tests were brand new material.

didn't like this class- lectures are long and boring- says he has to use all the time he's allotted- there's a LOT of reading and he gives pop quizzes so you HAVE to read it all. short exams were pretty easy if you read the books- o, and turn your cell off! overall- boring and WAY too time consuming!

He calls the role every day. He has a seating chart. During exams, he is very suspicious of cheating. Seems to be very knowledgeable about history. His lectures are very boring. He requires blue books on the exams for essay questions that count a large percentage of your grade. (He gives the questions in class.) Study guides are long, but helpful

I did think I would enjoy the class. He gives quizes, written homework, only 4 papers are due, and test with review and handouts. He also gives extra credit with the quizes. Pretty easy if you do your homework and listen in class.

This teacher is GREAT!!! He makes the class interesting with lots of detail. Note this class is not for those who don't enjoy history! It is not an easy A & you will have to participate and read the material. But, if you want to learn about WWII from a good teacher, this is the class you should take!

If you like history at all take hime. you have to read, show up to class, and try. you will actually learn something from this guy. he's very nice and you can tell he enjoys teaching. he does a cool theatrical performance where he dresses up and recreates a historical event. it's cool- i thought it was very interesting.

Great guy! Very helpful and listens to his students opinions and ideas. I would recommend him to anyone. If you take him for upper division history, beware he assigns a lot of reading and expects you to do the reading. If you have an idea of what the reading was about, even if you don't finish all of it, you will do fine

An excellent teacher. If you care about history, peoples' lives, uniquely american experiences, and the wonders of our world, then you're ready for classes taught by Joseph Hawes. He'll make you care and make you smarter...please just try to empathize with the lives of other people.

YUCKO! I could not stay awake to save my life. As if history is not boring enough, his monotone voice puts you to sleep. PLUS you get lots of quizzes.. AND for the test he gives about 80 terms for you to study and on selects 12 for you to write a paragraph about on the actual test! Dont take him.

Comment:

He isn't the problem. His graduate students are a pain. They don't grade the same and they never put comments on the writing assignments you have to do. The quizes are two questions now. Answer one and get full credit, the other one for extra credit. also, just split up the terms and you'll be good.
