The class is hard... because it's ECON! Study, take notes and ask for help and you should do fine. The prof is old-school, which is a nice change from the others we get around here.

This prof. is by the book. He is old school in his teaching method and is cannot hear your questions. I found this class very fusterating in trying to learn the subject. He is very willing to help outside of class but overall I would take the class with someone with younger or diffrent teaching style.

This class was extremely hard!!! Prof Smyth is helpful and kind if you go to him outside of class. Class attendance is mandtatory...he docks you points for being late, etc. these points are no joke!Don't spend them, having these extra points helped me get a B rather than the D I actually deserved. Although class is boring GO,earn your points.

This class takes up ALOT of time. Smyth teaching style is very 'traditional.' Tests are extremely hard/tricky. You MUST arrive on time (docked for being a min. late). Purchasing/reading the book is a must as well.

Do NOT take him unless you have no choice. You will have to read each chapter more than once because his tests are hard. He says he takes off points for attendance, tardiness, and cell phones, wrong, he takes off percentage points. Miss a class grade drops by 1 percent, cell goes off in class 5 percent off final grade. Take M. Abajian for an A.

This guy is OLD. I mean he cant even hear your questions nor can he comprend it correctly. You will have to repeat the questions many times. Very blunt and rude towards student who are trying to help others during class. His tests are easy but his policies are hella wack. Ya....one pt off from being 1 min late. He needs to chill a bit. Seriously...

Prof. Smyth is a stickler for attendance. He kicked out a couple of people who didn't stay the whole period. His exams are okay - all multiple choice. He's helpful when you have a question, but he is terribly boring. He also picks on every student to answer questions.

I took intersession with him. He's not a bad teacher, it's just that economics is a hard subject. I had to do some intensive studying at home and I worked my butt off to get an A in that class. My advice is to read the chapters before class so the lectures will be easy to understand and take advantage of the online quizzes/key questions and study!

I took him for both 120 and 121 because he taught the short-term versions. I recommend the short-term version of Econ because there is less BS and no research paper (!!!). Prof. Smyth is old-fashioned but his lectures, tests, and information are valid. Econ is pretty basic and clear-cut and there is no (good) reason you should have a hard time.

The course was tough, especially the 5-week summer class that I was enrolled in. Mr. Smyth did a better job at lecturing than my previous attempt at Econ 120 at Miramar College. The only work were the readings, take home quizzes, and exams. I think he is a pretty decent teacher, so I am taking him again this Fall 2005 for Econ 121.
