Comment:
Jan is a very knowledgable guy, but his teaching style is very dry- especially to those who aren't at all interested in theatre. He cares very much about his students, and hates it when people skip his class.

He is obviously made very uncomfortable by new ideas, so college is definitely not the setting he should be in. If he feels threatened by your abilities at all, he will use subtle verbal abuse, making the class very unpleasant. It was difficult to force myself to go and I would recommend him to no one.

As much as I didnt think i would like this class i ended up getting an award at the end for pretty much not going to class half the time, but i did every single hw ahead of time and he helped me write an awesome play that I never knew I could accomplish. U watch or read plays every day or listen to him lecture about his own. Highly recommend, great

Class was usually fairly boring. You are required to do about 4 recitations to the class: poetry, drama, childrens lit. ect. There is also a group performance at the end of the semester. For each performance you must do an analysis. Its an easy class as long as you show up and do the work.

Probably one of the most mild mannered men I've ever met. His personal teaching style isn't horrible, however he could use something to spice it up a little bit.

Really, really boring and dry. I hated going to class everyday because you really learn nothing from the lectures and they often don't apply to much that you're supposed to be learning. You're graded on 4 oral presentations, which is very easy. you'll get an A, but you'll also never want to take any of his classes again.

Boring and you learn nothing in his lectures. Tests are wicked easy. No point in taking this class, you learn virtually nothing. I tune him out the whole lecture, every lecture and i'm "excelling" in this class. There's something wrong with that i think. =/

I was stunned to see the post from a student on 10/15/05 because this teacher has got to be one of the nicest guys I think I've ever met. The student must be on crack or something. This teacher is easy and REALLY into his field (with a name like Jan Quackenbush you have to be in theater). But he does command your attention and he'll let you know

I posted the 2nd comment on here after only having 2 classes and thought he was pretty nice. Since then, I've discovered he is quite lacking as a teacher behaving unlike how I would expect any adult to act, let alone a teacher. I've witnessed him singleing out certain students with talent and mocking and embarrassing them. I have no respect for him when he uses sarcasm, seemingly making it personal, even outside the classroom. Can u say POWER TRIP?

He is nice and reasonable because he understands how hard college life is but he is extremely unclear about what he is teaching and the assignments he wants done. When he gives lectures, they are very dry. He needs to look for a way to spice up his class a little bit.

Inspiring and fun to work with. Sometimes unclear about assignment objectives. Lives for theatre, and has no reserves about showing it. Recommend for playwriting.
