Took him online & he was fine. Always reminded us when exams were due for the week, which was nice. VERY STRICT on following instructions, so READ IT!!!!! Clear grading criteria, rarely contacted him b/c everything was well organized. Discussion posts, Quizzes, & Lockdown browser Exams. 5 tries on exams, diff Qs each try, cumulative final.

The class was ridiculousl stressful for no reason. The test do not match watch is on the powerpoints and I had some technical issues during the final due to the lockdown browser that we have to use. I was not able to finish th 5 attempts he provides so I can get the highest grade. I showed him pictures of the error message and he still didn' care.

I knew senior sem would be hard, but this almost killed me and took my joy forever. Even though he is difficult, He is very clear about everything, and gives many reminds as an attempt to keep students on track. His rubrics are inclusive. Directions are vague, but grading is not. Paper 10-15 pages, MFT Exam, and two 25-30 min presentations.

He is so bad. I had to drop his class within the first few weeks. You can study for hours to fail his tests. Do not take!

This professor makes you use the lockdown browser with a webcam and the tests do not relate to any of the notes. Lots of reading. Changed my major to something other than psychology because I did not want to get him again.

All I want to say is run! Do not take his class. I have sent him over 8 emails and he did not respond. He is not specific about assignments. Also, he does not care at all about the students. DO NOT TAKE HIM.

Tips for this prof. Read the instructions, read them again, than read them one more time. Do exactly what it is says and your guaranteed a B. Read the powerpoints exactly before each quiz, questions are straight from them. You will be able to pass each quiz this way. Course material is actually beneficial to planning how to use your psych degree

Dr. Helms honestly scared me to death. When one reads through his rubrics, it is implied that the most minute mistakes can tank your grade. However, I believe that this man is a genius. Because of his heavy grading penalties, I did not dare to turn anything in without double and triple checking everything. His criteria also allowed me to know why!

Professor Helms is an ok Teacher. I wouldnt want him to be my professor again. Hes a very tough grader. He removes points for every single mistake made in his assignments. Which can cost you part of your grade. His quizzes are somewhat easy. Be prepared to read..

Dr. Helms was rather off-putting at first, but overall I ended up enjoying his class. He is a nice, if somewhat weird, dude who wants you to think critically and test yourself. The text for the Careers class is also pretty handy and I intend to use it beyond this class. Be sure to read everything carefully!

If you are taking Dr. Helms for senior seminar in the summer time, you cannot procrastinate. There is a topic approval that is VERY difficult to pass. I passed literally at the last second after having worked for a week to get it approved. However, Dr. Helms is caring and reasonable in personal emergencies and does want you to succeed.

Comment:
Professor Helms doesn't come across well in text. Try not to read to much into his textual tone. 100 points from 4 tests, 25 points from MFT, 100 from paper (min 10 pages), and 100 from presentation (25-30min). Rubrics are clear but instructions are not. Overly critical with procedure over content. Follow directions to a T. Get topic approved ASAP.

I had to drop senior sem this semester because my topic for my research paper and presentation was not approved. It was a 4 week session I course, and 3 weeks into the semester my topic still was not approved. Points were being deducted and I did not feel confident that I would pass the course. If I had to push back graduation, you know its tough!

I wouldn't want him to be my Psychologist. He only responds to emails twice a week. That is important for HIS mental health. Doesn't care about student's mental health! Even when you completely follow his directions, he will take points off for some unknown reason. Uses book he wrote for class and it is long and boring.

Comment:
NO!!! Dr. Helms is unnecessarily tough, getting an A is seemingly impossible. He is condescending when you make a technical error; turning in assignments is more of a technical challenge than an academic challenge. He gives you 30 minutes for 25 questions involving extremely specific statistics, barely differing answer choices, and trick questions.

I am a senior and have taken Dr. Helms 3 times and he is among the worst. For sen sem, almost all of your points are from a paper and presentation which he grades VERY strictly. Ive never struggled in a class until I took his senior seminar class. I would not gamble my GPA and tentative graduation with his class and neither should you.

His grading is absolutely ridiculous. He has instructions and believe me if you do not follow EVERY last direction do not expect to get an A on that assignment. He also will not allow you to see him during office hours and will refer to other resources before he answers your question. He is absolutely no help to when it comes to you understanding.

He is a very tough grader. The grading rubrics are not set up to help students succeed and very subjective. He responds to questions like you're stupid. This was a 4 week summer class. I do not recommend taking it in the summer. He did not tailor the course for the time allotted, the only exception being the page count for the essay.
