He's very approachable and welcomes questions in class. He can be difficult to understand at times, but it seems like he's trying to improve.

Comment:

Kind and willing to help students. However, his teaching style is very disjointed. Lecture doesn't give you mastery over material. I survived by looking up concepts online and practicing them there. Some of his midterm questions were extremely vague and unclear but he took a queue from students' complaints and made the final pretty straightforward.

has very good intentions and is approachable but overall not the best teacher. Slides are full of errors and he doesnt explain things clearly all the time. Over half the class failed his second midterm and labs are much more difficult than the material learned in class

He's the provost of the science & engineering college yet he has no idea what he's doing. Used another teacher's slides, constantly had to be corrected (by the class), and could never make up his mind about anything. At least the TAs were awesome.

Comment:

He's a provost, and it's clear he's forgotten how to teach. Uses slides from other professors, and reads off of them. Don't bother with lecture. Gives m.c. extra credit quizzes, that often didn't have the right answer available, which he admitted in class. I passed only because of MSI, the (rather good) textbook, and an awesome TA.

Ruined the class completely with his lack of organization in the class. Anything that I learned from the class came from one of the TAs, nothing from him. Slides and homework taken from other professors, vague questions and very little partial credit on the exams, just a terrible experience.

Knows almost nothing about the class, an undergrad that hasn't taken the course could teach it better than him. He just used previous teachers slides, quizzes, and home works. Never prepared for class. His "teaching" should be considered a crime against society and he should be forced to do community service for the rest of his life.

I don't know where to begin with this class, but it was the WORST class I have been in. The professor just can't teach the material. He makes things extremely complicated and confusing than it really is. His midterms are worded so poorly that it almost makes no sense. DO NOT take cmpe12 with him. I had to teach myself nearly ALL the material!

By far, Joel is the worest teacher i have had at my 3 years at UCSC. He copied the lecture slides from the previous quarters teacher, he didnt know what to cover when he came to class, and he blamed the students when 1/3 of the class failed the midterms. If at all possible, DO NOT TAKE CMPE12/L WITH HIM!!!

Not open to conversation with Crown students who aren't in his hand-picked honors class. I found him to be aloof and dismissive. I'm smart, too, you know! But I guess he'd rather believe that I'm another slack-jawed proll. His loss. Also, he made some scientic fact mistakes during the final.
