Doctor John is one of the best instructors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. He is a brilliant man and one hell of a writer, but you'd have to beat him with a stick to get him to admit it. Even if you aren't focusing on English or Writing in you Education, I do not think that you regret taking a class from this man.

Brilliant class! I adore the way Dr. Hales runs his workshops. He's very supportive, and offers his suggestions in a supportive, constructive manner. Because of this class, I have fallen in love with creative non-fiction writing. Best creative writing class ever!

A wonderful teacher. John Hales may be soft spoken and passive in front of the classroom but he's brilliant in his field! He is dedicated to his students, always willing to help, flexible, and understanding... a truly great instructor. His class was a joy. I would recommend it to anyone.

Kind of a hippie but very soft spoken and polite. Makes class interesting and values your opinions, something VERY rare in English teachers these days. TONS of reading though (like 12 books for this course). Puts you in groups a lot and makes you keep a journal on everything you read.
