He is one of the few professor who makes it fun in a learning environment. Good at teaching others and has the patience, will help you if you need it. The class is not hard itself, but if you skip all the time and don't study your notes, you will fail. But why would you? The tests are doable.

Science and Culture with John Nicols and Greg Bothun. Probably the best class I've taken at the UO. They took a group of students from varying backgrounds and thoughtfully explained the rise of science and religion over the past several thousand years. Reminiscent of Capra. Not for those looking for good grades or easy tests. Requires thinking.

He was a extremely detailed professor, but was so organized with the notes and lectures it was hard not to get what he was teaching.

Took Nicols' class on Ancient Greece, might be the best class/professor I've taken at the U of O. Very passionate about the material and his students. Puts very extensive notes online, but going to class (although not mandatory) is highly suggested. At the end of the day, he wants his students to succeed and actually learn.

Well laid out class strucute with online notes that clearly articulate his main points. Very interesting class and Nicols incorporates outside references to illustrate his point better. Lenient in grading. Completely invested in students' learning above all else.

I am a history major and Roman Republic. Nicols is the best teacher I've had in all four years of studying. He is very helpful and wants his students to do well and appreciate Roman history. In fact he makes his class so it is possible to fail the midterm and get an A in the class. He just wants his students to learn. I highly recommend taking him!

He is a very interesting professor. The content of the slides and lectures are different from but also the continuity of the textbook. So you need to go to class to have a better understanding. I love his jokes! Very adorable professor!

overall he's a pretty intersting guy. his jokes are kind of ridiculous, and he loves putting random inferences into his lectures. However, he is a great teacher who seems to love what he teaches. Be warned though, if you sit in the left handed desks and are a girl he might be tempted to pick on you for class participation questions

I'm not sure why everyone loves this professor so much. While he's obviously very knowledgeable, he doesn't know how to run a class. The daily group work is mind numbing, and with students he picks obvious favorites. However, HUM 354 is really easy because he spoon feeds you the answers he wants, even points out the quotes he wants you to use.

I was disappointed when I studied as hard as I did for this class to learn that Professor Nicols only tests on a small portion of what he actually requires you to learn. I also felt that I was treated unfairly by him on several occasions. While this may be a matter of opinion, I believe that if I was female this would have been different.

Great guy, great teacher, but its true that his tests are pretty hard. However, if you get your work in and do well in the text IDs on the test, you should do fine and learn way more than you would in most 100 or 200 classes

He is a nice guy, but he really requires a lot of work--more than I have ever had to do in a 100, 200, or 300 level course. He only tests on a small amount of what he actually requires students to learn by using randomness and I, along with many others in my discussion section, became discouraged.

What professor Nicols probably doesn?t realize is that the result of him demanding as much as he does in a 101 course is that people cheat on the exams because there is really no way for a student to do all that he requires well in addition to their other work without working around the system in some way. I feel that I, as someone who never cheat
