Comment:
Professor Lang's class discussions were insightful, and I could often gain a deeper understanding of the text after class discussions. Also, he gave out really specific and constructive feedback during his office hours, which helped me revise my papers. He definitely prepares me well for college-level writing.

Professor Lang took my writing went from a high-school standard to a college standard. This is not a class for those who want to mess around, or earn an easy A. This is a class that will challenge your current writing ability, will prepare you for a writing and research focused major. WARNING: make sure to check class content (literary VS history).

Lectures are very boring since he's pretty quiet. He is also quick to deny your position if he disagrees. But he does help improve essay writing.

Comment:
The agenda of the class is great (Monsters); but taking this class with Prof. Lang was pointless. He's a close-minded professor with a huge ego, analyzes everything in a sexual perspective, and will demean your intelligence if you ask too many questions. Save your time and pick a better professor, unless you took R1A with him.

At the beginning I disliked the class and thought he was a boring professor but by the end of the semester it was one of my favorite classes. The work is manageable and he gives reasonable time to complete essays and rough drafts. Go to office hours! He is really helpful and will guide you the right way.

Probably one of the most hardest professors in the writing department. It was a struggle in the beginning, but in the end I became a better writer. He may not be the most interesting teacher, but it is important to listen to what he says because it is key to writing essays. More than 90% of his students pass the portfolio.

I thought he was one of the best english professors. This class was a little bit hard but WELL worth it! He helped me become a better writer. If you don't understand he will help clarify things for you. It was challenging but isn't that what we're here for at Berkeley? I have to say that it was worth it. I LOVED the entire class!

I chose R4B over an R1B class b/c less work was involved (grade depends on participation, 3 big papers of 5-10 pgs, and a few smaller papers). Also, the material (monsters & modernity) was fascinating. He will help you write better RESEARCH papers. Go to office hours- he'll tell you what arguments you should develop and what pts you should make.

Professor Lang was seriously the best teacher I have ever had. he made me succhhh a better writer and critical thinker. I want to get into a Tier One law school so Im fairly OCD about grades, but I winded up getting an A-plus in the class. He works on the side revising the writing portion of the SAT. I would take him again. NEVER NOMINALIZE!

A good professor, very thorough in reading and giving feedback on essays. R4B wasn't a huge amount of work, just three essays and in-class discussion.

Lang is very unclear about what he wants you to write about, and his reasoning for why certain arguments are good seems arbitrary. I found him to be approachable after class and during office hours, but not very helpful. However, you're allowed to redo essays and turn them in later on for a better grade, which helps.

its a class that you definitely take if its the only one thats left.. at least thats how it was for me.. but i'll admit that i'm a better essay writer now... lang will push you until you break down in office hours and have to get a tutor for writing, but he will make you into a better writer.. that's for sure.

Prof. Lang, in my opinion is a very uneffective instructor. He is not clear about his expecations. He is not an approachable professor especially outside of his self-appointed office hours which may not be convenient for the rest of the class.
