Bettie didn't really teach this course, it was mostly taught by the guest lecturers. She is sort of rude to the class. The class had barely any criteria; just weekly quizzes, participation, and a final essay. Expected easy A. She didn't post a single grade throughout the quarter. I got a B+ & have no idea why. I emailed her but got no response.

Loved socy of sex, the class really opened up my ways of thinking and I took it last quarter of my senior year. socy 1 also great with prof Bettie. Wonderful teacher; honest, open and really takes you to the heart of sociology. AMAZING! In the top 3 teachers at UCSC for me!!

Comment:

Pop Culture studies was ridiculously easy. Everyday reading quizzes in place of midterms - which u switch with a classmate to peer correct for u. A couple 5pg papers on topics broad enough for u to choose something you're really interested in. So it's easy to to write. If she sees you really invested some thought and effort, you'll do well. I got an A in this class and barely made an effort. Highly recommended!

I expected so much more out of this class-by the 2nd part of the quarter, a lot of people just stopped going! I expected her to be much more engaging. The class was not very well-structured. In fact, the best part of it was a 2-credit optional video lab, which she didn't teach!

They censored the word I wrote below... but it was nothing bad. I thought some of her comments regarding race and her own recollection of experiences were unethical and unnecessary. She tried to seem hip and cool by expressing how much she knows about hip-hop. Im a socy major, but I got a bad grade b/c the class was very unclear and not engaging.

I enjoyed her Pop Culture class... her views on hegemony and resistance are original and refreshing. she has a feminist bias, but hey its UCSC what do you expect. plays good videos too... oh yeah, she is gorgeous.

This is the worst class I have taken at ucsc. There is absolutely NO clarity in any of bettie's themes and the objective of the class is exactly the same for EVERY SINGLE CLASS. Although this class is relatively easy, this class will be a waste of your time, money and units. Avoid at all costs.

Julie has done some great work in high schools and produced great research from it. That said, she pretty much blew at facilitating lecture. The class probably needed to be smaller for what she was going for, since it wasn't a seminar it didn't work. All the assignments felt like busy work. If you don't mind the mindless busy work you'll get an A

It seemed like any time someone asked a question in class, Bettie answered, "I'm not sure." She'll have to check up on it. This was incredibly annoying, especially since 80% of the time she's asking people for their opinions on things rather than teaching us what we need to know. The other 20% of the time, her lectures sucked. PhD? No way.
