Dr. Harper is brilliant and invites students to think critically, which may be a challenge for some. I took more away from his lecture than any power point presentation class. Strongly suggest office hour visits and TA review sessions.

There is lots of information and many different points of view to understand so you must stay awake during the lecture although it is very hard to pay attention. However, if you do pay attention in class and go to review sessions, you will do well. There are two midterms, a cumulative final, and two 9 page papers.

I didn't enjoy this class!& didn't learn anything! I learned more by going to 1-2 dr kraft's lecture-just to see how this class is - than in Harper's class. You get 10 essay questions for each midterm and for the final you have to know 29(2x10 &10 questions about the new material. The final was hard! He just lectures for 2hr, no visual.

I joned Rate my Professor just so I could rate Prof Harper. He was one of the BEST professors I've ever had! He was hilarious, a great lecturer, and extremely intelligent. This class encouraged me to think critically and not just spit out information. HDE 100A was a lot of work, but totally worth it. Harper is a boss.

So, he's a nice man BUT so not my type!! I'm a visual learner & he just talks for 2 hours straight! No break no nothing! TA's were not very helpful either!!

If you like teachers who just talk and don't use any type of PowerPoint he's fine. If not, take 100A with someone else.

Professor Harper may not be for everyone. However, I found him to be rather exceptional. His teaching and testing methods really ingrained the material in my head. And while I only got a B+ in the class I still feel as though I've retained a lot of the information even though I took his class a year ago.

Worst class I've taken at UCD. Don't get me wrong,if you like sitting in class for 2 hours listening to him then take this class, but if you can have any other choice, TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER. Also I found his tests more pointless, basically they just ask you repeat everything he says, the book, and the readings.

It was hard to learn something in his class b.c everything was compare and contrast. He didn't agree with the textbook most of the time, so we had to know both views PLUS the view from the additional readings. tests were HARD and required LOTS of time to study. papers were graded HARSH. I hated this class. Thankfully, he's retiring (I think)

Try to take this course with a different professor! He lectured for 2 hours straight without using Powerpoint. I skipped almost every lecture and bought the Classical Notes instead (they were almost verbatim from what he said in lecture). Tests were very tedious, compare-and-contrast lecture/book/articles. With LOTS of studying, I ended with a B+.

DOn't take this class- try for diff. prof. Harper is very old fashioned and his lectures jump all over the place- yet are essential to understand in order to pass the tests. The readings are also necessary; the exams consist of 10 essay questions comparing the text/lecturer/supplemental readings and you are given 3 of those to write about in class

USE HIM AS A FACULTY ADVISOR! He's a great faculty advisor for HDE 192, very little work compared to some of the other HDE professors and he's nice when you have to meet him in office hours- which you only have to do once.

Ya this class is really hard. you have to do a lot of work on your own and think critically. but it's worth it if you really want to learn. I had good TA's. without them i don't think i would have passed. You have to do ALL of the reading and understand it thoroughly. it's a LOT of work.

Took this professor before. He's not as bad, but I do agree, the professor is a challenging professor. He has the old method teaching style of "the lecturer". However, the TA's were extremely helpful. Take good notes from the professor and use good examples from notes and reading for the exams :) good luck

This professor was, by far, the worst I have had at UC Davis. Not only is he boring, to the point that someone fell asleep in class and was snoring really loudly one day, but his test are really lame too. DO NOT take a class with Harper if you have any other choice...

Yes, his style of teaching is difficult, but you can get into it if you try. He repeats himself a lot, which can be good if you miss a point the first time. If you have a good TA who does good review sessions before tests, you're likely to be alright. The classical notes do help. He expects you to think critically.

This teacher is TERRIBLE. Lectures for 2 hours straight. No lecture notes, slides, anything! He was extremely hard to follow as his thoughts jump from one thing to another. He speaks in a way that is hard to understand and inserts pauses at the wrong times. Avoid this class at all costs. Absolute worst teacher I've had in my college career. No joke

This class was terrible! His lectures were almost always impossible to follow as he jumps around all the time. The tests were a waste of time and super hard. I am really interested in the subject, but I felt that I hardly learned a thing in this class b/c it was so focused on contrasting opinions rather than actual material. AVOID if possible!

This class was extremely difficult. The lectures were boring and impossible to follow, and the reading (especially the reader articles) wasn't much better. Essay tests-must compare multiple (2-5) opinions. Buy the Classical Notes, go to review sessions, and try to attend/pay attention in class as much as possible. Or, better yet-AVOID THIS PROF!

WOW. This class requires A LOT of work. It is essential to read the textbook and reader and compare/ contrast those ideas with Professor Harper's ideas. The review sessions are great help so do not miss out on those.
