Very nice guy, but his grading is ridiculous. First exam no one got an A, and he didn't scale. Be prepared for a LOT of reading

History is not my thing at all. Got a B-. A lot of readings, which are difficult to understand so I stopped after first exam. Lectures are useful and I often used wikipedia for extra information before exams. 2 exams & final(2 essays in 50 min class each) so be a fast writer. TA/Discussion very helpful. Grade based on exams 75% and discussion 25&

History is not really my thing but this class was AWESOME. He's a quirky guy and very smart. You can't help but love the material when he's so enthusiatic about it. A LOT of reading and the exams are challenging. It's definitely not an easy A but nonetheless a great class taught by a cool guy.

This is the most amazing class I have ever taken. Everything about it was so interesting. The readings were informative and fun and I learned so much. I took physics in high school and through this class I learned how much effort was put for those inventions and what was the history behind them. I loved the professor and the TA was just as awesome.

He is by far the best professor I have had at UMass. I want to go into history of science because of him. You cannot help but love the subject as much as he does in his classes.

Prof Owens puts together a unique course that provides an interesting perspective on the historical topic. Drawing from disparate souces, students are given readings that are both informative and memorable. Lectures are stories. This is how history should be taught. Exams are all essays, but reasonable if you pay attention and read the materials.

Owens is extremely nice and probably one of the most intelligent professors on campus. The lectures are interesting, but he tends to drift off topic often. You have to read a massive amount of materials, and the exams are tough.

A truly devoted Prof. Loves his subject, and wants you to love it too. His grading can be a touch on the hard side, but fair enough. Lots of reading. He is always more than happy to help/talk.

Professor Owens isn't kidding when he says he puts his heart and soul into teaching it. Those willing to deal with his somewhat eccentric teaching style, a good deal of reading, etc. are bound to learn much from him. Always available for Q & A.
