Honestly, I don't know how to word this better, but she glitches when she speaks. I couldn't bear it. Zero communication with TAs. Doesn't let you have laptops or phones out in class. Lecture attendance is not mandatory, but essays assigned are designed to target those who don't go to lecture.

NOT AN EASY GE. If you are interested in the subject I would recommend taking the class despite the workload, but I would skip if you have no attachment. More work than you would assume. Most readings are important and will have to be referenced upon for tests and papers. No electronics during class, and slides not posted online.

I took this class along with ICS32, Stats67, ICS6B, and PoliSci11C. This class gave me more work than all those other classes put together. This class was also the only course I didn't receive an A on at UCI. If you're good at writing take the course. She lectures the course as if every student wants to be involved as much as she does.

Prof. is very engaging, you can tell she loves teaching about Asian American communities. You have to go to lecture for notes, she doesn't post them online. However, your grade is mostly based on your TA, not the prof.

There are about 2-3 readings every week and there is 1 book you have to read and write a paper on. The books are actually interesting and the readings don't take that long. It is really easy to get an A, or an a B+ at least if you go to class, take notes and do brief readings. Her lectures are also really well organized, I learned a lot.

I enjoyed this class because of my awesome TA and because we were learning about really interesting material. However, do NOT take this class if you're looking for an easy GE because you have to put in work. The lecture is not posted anywhere so either take good notes or have a friend fill you in because you'll need it.

Honestly a pretty hard class. There's 3 textbks with the big one easily found online. Hella reading that you have to do and discuss in disc. There's a paper you needa read a book for. But hey a really great lecturer and she's kinda hot if you're about that. Tests are kinda hard with an essay component. I loved the class tho

The class is pretty boring and there are way too much readings. The only interesting one is "I Love Yous are For White People." The other ones and lectures will make you fall asleep. The class is pretty easy though--although, this will largely depend on your TA. The midterm is free response and the final consists of two take-home essays.

Her lectures are boring as hell, and she doesn't post the slides. A couple essays that are graded much harder than they have any right to be. In class midterm. The required books are boring and preachy. I definitely wouldn't take this class again. If you are taking this for GE, take Anthro or Philosophy (or a subject that wont put you to sleep!)

There was definitely a lot of reading & it was essential for tests. Sometimes the readings for the week didn't match the lectures perfectly. TAs grade pretty much everything, so get a good one! However, Professor Vo is extremely passionate & her lectures were very interesting/engaging! She offers extra credit if you go to events.

Take this class! I actually learned a lot from the class despite falling asleep in some lectures. Don't leave the reading until the end. Professor Vo is very knowledgeable. As for tests, there's 1 midterm, 1 analysis paper, optional extra credit, and 1 take home final essay. It may be intimidating at first, but it's not as bad as it seems.

She doesn't post slides online, so go to class. There's a midterm, a paper based on a book, and a take-home final. On midterm, you get to choose what to answer, so just choose whatever you know. The essay portion requires info from readings. You have to read A LOT, about 60+ pages every week. You can get around some of the readings though.

Really knowledgeable about the topic and delivers some very detailed and interesting lectures, but 1h20m of straight lecture can get boring. Does not post notes online, so half the material on exams is covered only in attending lecture.

She's a great professor; interesting lectures (gets long, so becomes boring sometimes), very knowledgeable, and fair grader. My TA was somewhat not useful, but fair on students. No lecture slides online, but the content will stick with you if you pay attention and write some notes. Lots of reading, so organize strategically.

Way too much reading. Get a good T.A. In-class midterm, take-home final. One other essay. Discussion attendance mandatory. Doesn't post lecture slides, but it wouldn't help. Can sometimes be interesting but it's a long lecture and can get boring. Do your best. Keep up on reading or you will fall into an inescapable pit.

Professor Vo is an amazing teacher and inspirational figure. She shows so much passion in Asian American history and culture. She is knowledgeable, passionate, and attentive towards her students. The class itself isn't too hard, but attendance and reading are vital to success on the midterm, analysis paper, and final. I highly recommend this class.

Vo is okay, she has a lot of verbal static when lecturing so it's hard to pay attention and the lectures are a bit boring. If you don't go to lecture, you won't pass. She gives a bit too much reading so try to split up work with people. This class is honestly not easy, but not terrible. I did learn a lot about asian american culture.

Really good lectures, makes you come to class though since she doesn't post them online. A TON of reading, but she is fair when it comes to grading for the most part. A lot of work, but totally worth the depth on the subject of Asian Americans that the class brings to the table.

For a GE, this class is harder than it seems but a A is possible. The class is very predictable, just follow the syllabus and prepare to write a lot for the tests. She's a very inspirational person and teacher, and I learned so, so much. Really recommend for everyone, especially international kids!
