Comment:

A good professor. She is caring, gives a good feedback, and very helpful. Have no idea why so many bad reviews. It is a math class so you are expected to work here, and as long as you show that you want to learn you will have no problem getting any help. I would definitely take my future upper level math classes with her.

She did not give me the chance to at least work on getting a C. I had perfect attendance, participation, and turn in all my HW, but I did not pass the exams. And she still give me an F. She told me even if I got a 100 on the final I would get a D-she did made a remark that I will probably will not pass it- (Need more night classes for this subject)

Straight from the book, you don't learn a thing from her, reading from the book is a lot better than her, typos on tests and makes tests harder than the homework

Mary Gilmer tends to go way off topic ALL the time. Mary would spend (literally) 1 hour talking things that have NOTHING to do with the lesson. If she spent more time actually teaching than talking about irrelevant things she would be amazing. Her test are hard. Sure hope Mary reads her feedbacks especially this one. It might help her.

I am sad to see negative feedback on Prof. Gilmer from other students. She is wonderful. I avoided college for over 10 yrs because of math fear. I took her dev. math course and finished 3 semesters is 1 and am now TSI complete. If you are willing to put in the work, she will support you 150%. So inspiring that I nominated her for an award!

Comment:

Prof. Gilmer comes across as someone who isn't very invested in the learning of her students. Her explanations are confusing, she's unhelpful in class (slightly more helpful during office hours), and she's sarcastic and sneering. My best friend was the MyMathLab online homework via Pearson - I would've been lost without their explanations.

Calculus 1: Class participation encouraged. Lectures based on the examples from the book. Goes over any homework question asked. Classes often involve working with peers to figure out problems. Very helpful outside of class. Tough grader, test questions can be tricky. Homework mandatory and essential for mastery. Snarky sense of humor.

Spare yourself and DO NOT take her class! She does the easy problems in class and assigns more difficult ones for homework that you have to learn on your own time. There is A LOT of homework. She goes WAY too fast and teaches as if we already know the material. Do know how to do all of the homework and quizzes. SI did not save me.

She has a bit of an attitude, but is a very fair grader and will help with anything if you ask. Sometimes confusing, but overall a good teacher. Extra credit if you solve student questions on board, but only to make up for an absence or a missed homework. She even fairly took a question off of a test because she hadn't covered the information.

please whatever you do, don't take her class for College Algebra. she doesn't do any extra credit! when she does her lectures she only teaches the most easiest problem so when you go home and do the homework you find really hard questions that weren't in her lecture. shes very fast pace! even SI couldn't save me, shes just not a very good teacher.

This is the second time I've taken calc1, I've never been able to devote enough time for this class. M. Gilmer was always available during office hours to help me and was a fun and funny professor. She made the class enjoyable and not boring when I went. Even with poor attendance, she was very understanding and helpful.

Awesome teacher. She's attentive enough to know when someone isn't following a concept and readdresses it until everyone appears to understand. A little snarky in the humor depart, but that makes class a little interesting. Think before you ask questions, don't waste her time with questions you could've answered yourself.

Took Summer Semester 2012. Tough teacher, but fair. Does ALOT by the book. Attend class as gives extra credit/points fairly often. Nice teacher with a sense of humor.

I'm having to drop this class, although I did all the homework and her "In your World" projects. But got barely above 60s on the test. So doing the homework does not equal pass. Also, I haven't heard her say one original thing, she has the book memorized like a script. And you can never be right in this class, she must one up everything you say.

Comment:

I took this class during the summer (11 week session) and she does a good job teaching but assumes you have a strong knowledge of algebra, which I don't have. Her tests are very brief so you don't have room for error but she does give you the chance to correct them for some points back. Doing the homeowork is a MUST if you want to understand.

Comment:

She's a nice lady, and offers plenty of opportunity to make up for poor test grades. I suggest doing the homework, making it to class, studying for the tests, and saving yourself a lot of time doing EXTRA WORK. The only problem I have is that she doesn't post grades...never scored below a 89, still wondering what that means.
