I don't feel like I learned anything new in this class and just used the period as studio time. I'm not impressed with his work and although it was painfully easy I would really rather not take him again because of it.

it takes a certain student to be a phillips student. he doesnt teach you how to paint, but rather what to paint. i think he is best for an advanced student or a student that already knows how to paint. i would say, go talk to him and you will know if you would like him as a professor. he has helped me grow as an artist

Prof. Phillips is not for people who want to paint fruit in a bowl. He is a teacher for a student who wants to make big paintings, using big ideas to make a big statement. he knows tons of information on artists and will gladly show you. he is helping me move in a direction that i want and giving me the freedom that I need to do so.

great class if you have lots of great ideas that solve major issues in the art world. you must be EXTREMELY self motivated, there is no attendance policy! if you suck at art, he won't tell you...easy A...trying to understand his art is like trying to understand the string theory..he's the typical tormented artist

The class is geared toward painting/drawing students. The only grade is based on a sketchbook turned in at the end of the semester. No attendence policy. If you can't draw, you're not going to do well in this class. Very boring class. Movie for the first 2 hours with the lights off...great chance for a nap. Strict on sketchbook grading though.

you need alot of self motivation for his classes. he has no syllabus, homework, attendance, assignments etc. he grades at the end of the semester based on your personal development. even though there's no attendance..it's still a good idea to go to class and atleast check in with him..i didn't but i regret it.

Painting 1 - He didn't teach me how to paint. No syllabus. No homework assignments. A midterm and final critique. I loved the class - but students who have had a lot of previous instruction were extremely frustrated. He really encouraged my work and I think I'm going to major in Studio Art now.

i dont recommend the class unless you are a studio major. no grades except an art journal due at the end of semester. no need to go to class. no attendance. lectures are boring and basically just argue about artists and modern art, theories, and influences. philips is a good guy though.
