This is among the few courses at McGill that deals extensively with race politics. Great for students interested in deep inequalities and injustices.

Do NOT take two of his classes at once - he regularly assigns 200+ pages of reading per class per week, and puts all examinations/papers on the same day. This class made me want to drop out.

The course examines issues central to the professor's research. This makes him very engaged with the course content. But he is also good at connecting the specific topic of identity politics with broader issues, like mass politics, movements, political culture, history, and religion. A good course to think through your favorite issues.

This was my first seminar-style class. He was great at guiding discussion and responding to student presentations with helpful criticisms and suggestions. He also gave detailed and useful comments on the notes we need to write on some of the readings. The prof and the course set you up well to think creatively and do independent research.

Professor Subramanian is a great Professor. He is knowledgeable on the material and constantly asks the class if they have any questions. He is aware that the material is dense and tries to accommodate students to the best of his ability. It is easy to do well if people show up, and do the readings. He is always available to answer all questions.

Way too much reading per class, seminars are terribly structured and completely unhelpful, prof is terrible at leading discussions, and the grade is based on attendance, two papers and one presentation. Do not take this class with this prof!!

Don't take this class or any of this prof's classes. He assigns an excessive and unneccessary amount of readings, you're graded only on a midterm, a paper and conference participation, and his lectures are awful.

This professor is really a useless , brutal professor. He tries to be a hero sending the student to Dean's office nor reason. Lots of paper , tough grader. I would definitely not suggest this professor .

The lectures are interesting but also fast and covers a lot of material, so be attentive and take good notes. The upside is that the course is very interesting esp if you're interested in international politics but we had to write a 20 page paper and it was brutal! Midterm and exam is also very hard.

Very Underrated Prof. His research and work is amazing, especially because he questions a Eurocentric approach to identity politics. Very interesting.

Very boring classes. Couldn't help falling asleep. Though he knows his subject very well. I recommend only if you are very interested in the subject, otherwise you'll just have no incentives to learn. Hard final.

I took his POLI 227, 423, and 435 class. POLI 227 is boring, because it seems like the professor himself is bored. But in his 400 level classes, the man comes alive! He's awesome!

I took his 227 class, and yes it was boring, but in 423 he was so into the material and his lectures were so much more interesting. It's obvious that he enjoyed teaching this course. He's a great professor, and if you try hard you will do well.

I am a very good student, this guy is a brutal teacher. Listening to his lecture recordings for the 10th time might not be sufficient to make his arguments clear. He is more boring than anything and is totally useless in office hours. Youd think for someone so stupid, who is a sub in for Bryden, he might try to compensate by not being so useless.
