Comment:
Dr. Ohtmer is the real deal and draws on years of experience working in the industry at Messerschmitt and in academia. You won't learn how to click buttons but you will learn the mathematics behind the code including matrix operations and Eigenvalue computation. He does have an accent but he is very supportive of his students during office hours.

You people missed the point of the class. If you intend on doing stress analysis and other multi-physics simulations as a professional engineer you must also learn how to do hand calculations. In industry they are part of the deliverables (report). Else computer analysis is worthless. That is what Dr. Ohtmer tries to instill in us.

Just finished MAE 409A with him. It was a total waste of time and money. Got an A but learned nothing . His use of "technology and simulation" is a joke . Please someone put him (and students) out of this misery . I want my money back!

This class is perfect if you want an A to raise your GPA. If you want to learn something about FEA go somewhere else. He clearly puts a lot of effort into his teaching and is brilliant at the subject. It's getting the information from his head into yours that is the problem.

Because he gives easy A's, he's not rated as poorly as he should be. His 'textbook' is completely incoherent. Same with lecture. He puts up a transparency for 2 seconds and expects us to absorb the info. I learned absolutely nothing in this class. In-class demonstrations are useless. $717 dollars wasted. Honestly the worsst class I've taken.

I agree with the previous view. I just finished MAE 409 A. Got an A but learned nothing. I had him before but he is not getting any better! He keeps talking about teaching up to date but no one seems to understand what he is teaching. His notes are no help either. Why does the university let him teach? The only reason why students tolerate him is

Actually a friend of mine, but I can be objective. Easy to get an 'A' but his lectures are not clear. Need to purchase the lecture copies from Kinkos, but those are just as helpful as his lectures. Great guy, great researcher, very intelligent but not a great teacher. I didn't learn too much, except a few words in German.

I had a class in K5 that was a lot like this. after lunch at around 1, the teacher would tell us to put our heads down and then she would read to us from some book, and we would all fall asleep. and then you read the notes and it all becomes clear. he's good enough to take twice.

Speaks in German word order. Teaches method using math we don't know. Says his method is best and that our book is garbage , but no one understands it. Avoid if you actually want to learn. I learned nothing, was totally confused, but still got an A.
