All I can say is, thank god he's retiring so I don't need to take another Music Theory class with him. For some weird reason he thinks it is a good idea to teach a new and complex idea in the last 10 minutes of class the day before an exam.

although he's passionate about music, he is unable to convey the material in a constructive way what so ever.

Also took Chamber Choir. He's very passionate about music, which contributes a lot, and he knows his stuff. I sometimes wished for more clarity and structure in choir, and in MUS 247 a little more pizazz in lectures, but overall, fairly solid--really great guy.

His music class was terrible. He was boring as could be, and expected the students to know most of the material walking into the class on the first day. He should be fired or kicked in the nuts, either or.

Choir is definetly a great time...although we could use some more males and better attendance overall. High quality music and lots of fun!

Bubbly and fun in choir, but put him in a classroom and Paul becomes the most stuffed-shirt, least helpful old-school prof you can find. He honestly wants to teach you, but he's already decided that you'll do badly, and consequently, you will. AVOID academic classes with Althouse at ALL costs.

Notice that most of the other critiques are from people who had Althouse from Choir. For his regular course, Music Through Time and Society, he is horrible. Avoid him at all costs. The course is awful, and amazingly difficult.

Paul needs to learn how to conduct. And make the choir watch him. And enforce attendance. And not play the piano so we rely on it. And not make females be tenors.

Paul is a great choir director. The choir here isn't amazing but it's good and a lot of fun. I've not had him as a professor, but I'm planning on taking a class with him next semester.

"Paul," as we call him, is an accomplished leader of the Connecticut College Chamber Choir, or CCCC. At times, he can be obsessive or unclear... But we could also be better at preparing and practicing on our own time. He is always very helpfu

One big problem is that it's very difficult to figure out what information the students will be required to know on the midterm and final. A significant part of grades for papers is based on grammar and punctuation. But he is a nice guy and will help you.
