Don't really need to show up to class all he does is read from slides. The slide material is not all relevant, you just need to write two papers for this course. Graded by TA so professor is not as important. The essays can be written without the material he assigns you to read

He is the best professor that I think in UCSD. His power point is useful and the exams are the same as the study guide. The questions in the exams are very very very straightforward!!! If he teaches MMW again next year, you should take his class!!! Though his lectures are a little bit boring.

Goldstein was awesome and informative! Hes a super chill guy and actually quite funny. He keeps lecture interesting by connecting the topics we are learning with television shows. I would take him again

Professor Goldstein is a great professor. His lecture slides are really useful and informative, I just wish he posted his slides on tritoned. He did assign three papers for the quarter, but they were all very interesting and were easy As for me. The only difficult thing was the final. The final was significantly harder than the midterm.

Honestly, Goldstein was all over the place. He was never prepared for lecture, didnt care to spell any of his slides correctly, and overall pretty boring. However, he does care about his students and was fairly easy in his tests and exams.

He's passionate about the subject but misses his research. You read A LOT but it's helpful for learning the material and writing good papers. Not a lot of things are graded, just section attendance, 3 papers, and 2 tests. He's really nice and approachable.

Easy class, just show up and follow the reading materials. Lectures are a little dry but he is nice, fair and the TAs grade your papers. Only 2 papers required for the class.

I found it kind of difficult to focus in class. I witnessed a few students falling asleep in class. This is one of those classes where you may struggle to pay attention or stay awake. Also the TA"s grade both of the essays that you're graded on, so they're probably more important than the prof. in that perspective.

Really boring. He does not make an effort to engage with his students. He just lectures with slides. You can easily get an A without attending class. He also seems to care more about his research than improving his teaching skills.

I really only showed up for maybe 1/3 of the lectures and I passed with an A-. The readings are only needed for the 2 essays, and the research for sources was the biggest drag. LISTEN to his instructions of how to find sources! Use more than one source. If you talk to him, he will like and remember you.

Its great to have an intro class taught by an archaeologist with so much experience. Lectures are detailed but that's so much better than a bunch of general comments that are just commonsense (like in sociology, sorry). Prof gives only 2 exams, readings aren't too much, and I learned a lot...

Yes, lectures can seem excruciatingly long. And yes, there's a lot of reading. And yes, he does sound a bit like Ray Romano. But his teaching is on a general course that offers lots of basics and some of the complaints are to be expected. It wasn't too hard nor was it a breeze. Welcome to University people.

I've taken two classes with Goldstein, ANAR 156 and an ANAR 100 special topics class, and he is very helpful if you show interest. His lecture style can be a bit dry but the topics are interesting and he's always in a good mood and willing to clarify. Get used to him being a bit late for class. He's a fair grader; and his TA Alicia is awesome!

Winter 2011 - 2 books required + online pdfs. Used WebCT. Midterm study guide provided. Split w/other classmates. 1 essay and a final. If you show up, share notes w/other students (via WebCT), read what he gives you and learn the study guide you should be fine. Note: TA not too friendly - has attitude. Not approachable.

Everyone says his tests are take home but for our class the midterm was not. I'm just putting this down now because of people who want to take him next quarter. Be prepared to STUDY! Class midterm average was low.

He DOES sound like Ray Ramano and it's very endearing. Goldstein is very nice, very approachable, and encouraging. Lectures are a bit hard to endure awake 100% of the time and like someone else said, bringing coffee or pinching yourself every five minutes helps. Midterm and final are take home. Textbooks are not needed IMO. Reader is though.
