Do not take for Taxation. I found the tax code to be very confusing. I had trouble understanding it on my own. When in class, instead of explaining the code, Professor Ting would simply read the code out loud to us. I had to teach myself the material. I've heard Prof Ting is good in other classes, just not an intro to taxation.

Worst professor I have had at Temple Law. He speed-reads the textbook / Tax Code, barely explains a single concept. Made what should be a very learnable and digestable subject dense, dry, and intolerable. I should have heeded the below warnings and stayed far away from this professor's classes.

Ting is great for Tax. Subject is dry (you just CANNOT liven up the tax code. you can't). But Ting has good dry humor, weaves in interesting and thoughtful policy questions, and as has been said, does not hide the ball. Test very fair. Better than average class, which is a high compliment for Tax and thus Ting.

Comment:
He reads DIRECTLY from the book, plays favorites, and dismisses most questions for clarity as borderline stupid. If you get it, good for you...but if you find yourself needing help, don't ask this guy. He mulled over teaching a case to us because he didn't agree with it. Imagine if that's how all law teachers were? Teaching: He's doing it wrong.

Others hate Ting for tax. But tax is code-based; don't blame the man, blame the code. If you love tax, you'll love Ting. Totally straightforward, no hide-the-ball. Test very fair.

I have to agree with the previous post. He often answered the questions incorrectly when we reviewed them, I seriously question how he graded the exams. He literally reads the tax code in class and then asks us what we think about it, which usually results in silence.

The worst tax professor at Temple. His exam questions require you to do someone's actual taxes and have very little to do with what a tax attorney actually does. His exams are so ridiculous that he cant even answer his own questions, and frequently answers them incorrectly

Avoid at all costs. Extremely dry and unmotivated. Goes through the motions but doesn't seem at all to really care if we learn the subject, doesn't try to be innovative, doesn't try to make it interestig AT ALL. About 5 people participated in class all semester and this didn't seem to phase him in the least, didn't change his approach once.

Ting's politics rarely come up in his taxation classes. Instead, he works through the tax code very methodically. He doesn't teach the way a 1L professor teaches, so if you liked your 1L classes you probably won't like him. But if you hated 1L, you'll probably like taking Ting for Tax. It's dry, but if you listen you'll learn a lot.

Don't worry, you won't have Ting to kick around much longer; he's declared his intention to run for the US Senate--and they're welcome to him. You learn the course matter, but his teaching style is from another century. Conservative to the core.

Ting just reads the code to you in class. Almost no policy discussion. A lot more reading than tha other tax sections. He doesn't call on people so you don't have to worry about that. I dont' even think he took attendance but for those of us who aren't the best in statutory interpretation he's tough.

Clear and concise, if a little boring, Ting is not going to suprise you with anything. He walks through examples of most of the concepts in class.

Heavy code-reading class. Be prepared to work and understand federal tax statutes. Not an easy class, but he is a good teacher. He tends to be very precise. Very conservative, politically-speaking.
