Comment:

Schock himself is a very good English teacher. If you're an English major this is a good class for you, but if you're not an English major STAY AWAY. This felt like a grad class or a 3000+ course. The subject is very boring because it's long passages of poetry, but Schock loves it. If you're a person that will read everything then take him.

Comment:

Literally the best English professor I've had in my four years at UNO. He really understands his students and genuinely cares about their progression in the course. Be prepared to work, but he is very reasonable with deadlines and he grades work fairly. If you are truly passionate about English literature, then you will enjoy his class.

I had Dr. Schock for ENGL1158 his first semester teaching at UNO back in the late 80's. I thought I was a better writer than I was, but I learned a lot through the detail comments he wrote all through my papers. Comment:

Dr. Schock is a genius. He is probably the most intelligent professor I've ever had as a college student. His intelligence makes for a tough yet rewarding class. Lectures are sometimes boring but this class was not the most interesting subject. He did his best to make it as interesting as possible. He loves participation and is very helpful.

Comment:

Dr. Schock is a great professor. However, you'll notice in the other ratings words like "Ivy League"and that his undergrad class is like a "Grad" class. I wouldn't consider this a good thing. He's helpful, and eager to teach but goes off on academic tangents and makes references to things undergrads have not been exposed to which causes confusion.

This professor is insanely smart. He is a great opportunity for english majors. However, this is a 2000 level class and he's teaching it like its grad school. Its a seriously tough class but he really is genius. I'd say don't take if you just need a Lit credit. Its a hard professor to impress.

I was an undergrad student of Dr. Schock's almost 20 years ago and the descriptions of him from the other raters are just what I recall of him. If you're an English major, don't pass on the opportunity to take any of his class offerings.

Oh my god my first review ever on here because it is absolutely necessary. This guy. Miraculous. If you don't take his class you won't experience proper college. His class goes beyond the material - English that reaches into metaphysics, morals, spirituality. His lectures are spectacular. This is the best class I have had in my life. TAKE him.

When you're in his class, you forget you're at UNO, rather, it feels as though he's Ivy League professor material. When he lectures, it's like you're reading a scholarly article because the man uses words you've never heard of. You MUST read the text closely and participate in class to do well. Read, participate, try and you'll make an A. I did.

Dr. Schock is one of the best and most knowledgable professors that I've ever had. He will push you harder than you've ever been pushed in a 2000 level course and he admitted that to us, but an A from this man will feel earned. if you're willing to work HARD for your grade, then take him.

This man is a walking dictionary!! Extremely nice and personable..willing to help his students anyway he can..class can get a little boring at times,but he does his best to keep the material intresting and challenges you to think. Tests are not bad must come to class and pay attention to do good. Papers are clear, a tough but fair grader!!

This class was almost 100% discussion (student led) and a lot of the material was awful to read. Although Dr. Schock was really helpful in regards to writing the paper, I feel like he could have led the class discussion more efficiently and given us a bit more guidance. None of what went on in class helped on his exams.

Comment:

An excellent professor. His eloquence and passion hit you within five minutes of being in his class. Plus he's cute. You have to read to do well in his class, and he favors poetry over prose. I didn't like poetry before I took this class, and now I'm inspired to look for more. Dr. Schock moved me.

Very dedicated prof and knows EVERYTHING about Byron, Wordsworth and so forth. Always very courteous and deserves the same in return. Has a way about leading class discussion and asking questions that make the student think. Don't try to bluff that you've read the material!
