Comment:
Phil is a very cool guy. Very very mellow and has 1 volume. Lectures are the entire class. If you can sit through monotone lectures for 2 hours you will pass this class. That is basically the only challenge. He knows his stuff and would surely reccomend over Burrows. Also DO NOT buy the book, I got a B and never cracked it open.

There are zero assignment so if you think you know the material and end the test with a poor grade there is no room to re-learn the material or practice.

He knows his stuff, but lacks the enthusiasm to capture my attention. His lectures are ALL notes and there is little to no homework or activities, just midterm exams to rate your performance. He is pretty monotone and boring, but is a nice guy. If you study a lot and attend class you will pass. The worst part is just making yourself go every day.

There are no study guides for the tests so complete and full understanding is needed. Tests on graphical information, which I have never seen a teacher do before. The quizzes do prepare you for the tests, but not fully. The tone in his email replies is not very friendly but he seems very knowledgeable.

This is my second time taking his class. The lectures are very boring. He is knowledgeable in the subject but has trouble explaining things with out long pauses and uhms and uhs. If you take this class the book is helpful but most of the material is online. Attendance isn't mandatory but he corrects the book...

There are 3 tests the entire term. There's no in class assignments, homework or E.C. The tests are worth 30%, 30%, and 40% of your grade. I find it extremely frustrating that there's no homework. Class workHW is there for students to show what they know, make the corrections and then learn the material correctly based on what they missed.

its almost as if the course should be called "Economics form Phil Martinez's perspective" there is a heavy liberal slant on the material that while i feel may be valid, i worry that it changes what he teaches. he only wants you to know things they way HE knows them. its annoying at the tests are hard and poorly written AND worth 100% of your grade

His tests are extremely difficult, they don't seem to be based much off of either his lectures or his readings. His rambles about material without any real structure. I would never take a class from him again.

Exams were not based of things covered online. Says practice exam questions appear on exams (maybe 4 out of 60 were on there. Need to know almost everything from chapters. Wording is difficult to understand and makes questions as hard as possible. Never again.

Extremely nice guy. Very knowledgable, explains theories in a way that makes you able to rationalize the work you're doing instead of simply memorizing formulas and the like.

One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He seems very knowledgeable, but has difficulty teaching. Talks in tangents that do not directly relate to the material we were learning, and wound not answer questions directly.

First review I'm giving on this site! Phil is an approachable teacher. He is also very knowledgeable. His lecture notes are easy to read and interrupt. Mandatory attendance is required if you wish to do well. He doesn't assign any hw. You don't have to purchase the course book, he rarely refers to it. Hard class I guess, but I'm learning a lot!

smart guy. syllabus useless. reading was online, obtuse, confusing. lectures interesting but not always applicable to tests. tests were all take home essay. i STILL don't know what the heck i was supposed to write about. attendance optional unless you want to pass the class. think D or F if you try to read the material and pass. i learned lots

This man does not have a gift for teaching, he clearly knows the subject but it feels more like he is boasting about his knowledge rather than teaching.

"When you see a question on my test, you shouldn't just answer it. You should use it to show your mastery of the subject." That is him explaining why, when you've fully answered a question he asked, you only recieved between 5 to 6.5 points out of 10.
